Great movie, but would have liked better narration
I thought it was a very enjoyable movie, but could have been better narrated. I thought Morgan Freeman was well-chosen as the narrator, but the script he was given was somewhat lacking. There were many long pauses in narration, that, although they enhanced the feeling of isolation that's ever-present in Antarctica, seemed to be too frequent. It even felt like at times they forgot to include some lines because the flow was disrupted.
I wish some of those gaps were filled with more scientific information about penguins, instead of desperately trying to force the idea that they are very much like humans. My frustration at this attempt at anthropomorphizing reached a peak when you see the petrel attacking the chicks, and a few adult penguins, noticeably larger than the predator, just stand there doing nothing. I think penguins are more complicated than most think, but a lot of what they do is instinctual and required to survive.
I understand that one of the main points of this movie was to show these penguins possessing human characteristics while living in such a harsh environment, but I would have liked to have been educated a bit more in those 80 minutes of beautiful visuals. I found myself googling penguins afterwards because I felt like I didn't learn very much.
As an aside, the music seemed a bit cheesy. So basically, the visual aspect of the movie was amazing, but besides the penguins and the voice of Freeman, the audio was lacking in my opinion :).
