Brodie Overrated?

Brodie muttered quietly throughout the whole movie. It was as if this was the only thing he ever learned in an acting lesson and used it throughout the entire film. The vague East Coast accent was a little annoying as well. I found it inconsistently applied. I haven't seen him in any films before, but I was surprised at this considering he has won an Oscar (not that it is much more than a popularity contest these days).

I loved Adrien Brody in Summer of Sam and filed him in the back of my mind as someone to watch and someone I really liked. I still haven't seen The Pianist, for which he won the Oscar, but I too was annoyed with him in Hollywoodland, not just as the character but as an actor. The NY Times reviewer said it very well that he failed to shape Louis Simo into a character of interest. I kept wondering during Hollywoodland what Gary Oldman would have done with the role.

I notice that Academy Awards usually mistakenly are given to characters you feel sorry for instead of actors who give the best performance. (Therefore The Pianist? I reserve judgment till I see it.) I still have faith in Adrien & am hoping he can pull off something really cool again.

I don't care for Hoffman.

It's his real accent he has in this movie. He grew up in Queens, NY, but his accent is stronger on certain words than others, I'm guessing due to his travels and roles.

I haven't seen many of his films, but I thought he was great in this film.

reply

Nope. Not overrated.

Brodie is overrated, but Brody was fantastic.

I actually liked Affleck's performance better than Brody's; Brody felt disingenuous and bored me. They could've expanded Affleck's scenes slimmed down Brody's part and it would be a great movie. But, Ben was unpopular at the time and Brody was more respected so I guess they felt like they needed more Brody.

Just finished the movie and I think pretty much every other actor did a better job than Brody in this particular movie.

He was definitely the weakest part of the movie, which is sad considering he was a main character. He just didn't do this role well.

Nope!
