In my opinion, dead or at the very least, without a leg and possibly more.
He imagined she was still alive and healthy, and could never admit she was gone.
He even dreamed of her with an amputated leg.

And think about this......

He never...EVER...sees her again as far as the movie goes along...every time he SEES her at the rink of elsewhere...she is always wearing THE SAME THING...she is a ghost.

that is my take...he is delusional in seeing her.

She is either dead or severely crippled and would never want to see him again.

Chris mentioned in the movie that two people were killed, his two friends in the back seat. He sees Kelly around town, but is unable to approach her due to his guilt of causing her to lose her leg. The only thing imagined was his conversation with her.

The book is more detailed. She does live, her leg is gone and she goes from angry at him to forgiving him. But he never approaches her.

The book? I thought The Lookout was an original screenplay. Could you share the details of the book, please? Author and title?

it is an original screenplay. that person does not know what they are talking about.

Think about it. This movie takes place over a very short span of time. Also, we only see her outside in Kansas in the winter. It's cold there. She's wearing the same coat and hat. Do you have a different coat and hat to wear each day outside in the cold of winter? If so, then you're lucky. Under the coat, I'm certain that she's wearing different clothes. (Although, I'd like to imagine her wearing nothing... X^Þ. Laura Vandervoort is HOT!!!)

She was alive. He dreamed about her having a prosthetic leg because he knew she lost her leg in the accident. I think that some of the times he was "seeing" her walking around were imagined, but she most definitely survive the accident.

She was alive and kicking - only with one leg admittedly! You see her at the films end when Chris is recalling how things concluded and sadly reflecting that one day he may summon strength to actually face her and apologise!

its winter, she wears the same jacket and hat..
she most likely works for a bank or a firm that has a dress uniform.
i am my own boss and I wear the same clothes everyday..
my uniform.. 1 of my 10 black polo shirts with my name on it.. a pair jeans and steal toed work boots.
if you see me every day with the same coffee mug walking from the coffee shop.. will you think i am ghost?
how about if you scream at me and i dont reply or even glance at you? am i ghost then? or just a deaf guy who fixes motorcycles?

Yeah, when he had fallen asleep & saw her & talked to her, I thought maybe she had died, but at the end, he said that about how maybe someday she'd be ready to see him again....it implied that she didn't want to see him because she still blamed him. So, definitely alive.
