Gary tells Chris his job is to be The Lookout. Hence, you know, the name of the movie. But then he was not the lookout, some other guy was, and Chris played a much more integral role. Was this an unpleasant surprise? Or had his role in the heist changed?

The robbers were going to kill Chris straight after the robbery (as cops always look to an inside job.) Chris found shovels and bags in the getaway car. So they just strung him along saying he was to be the lookout when they only needed him for entry to the bank.
