Why did Chris have trouble using his left hand when it would appear that the left side of his brain had suffered damages? Wouldn't he have trouble with his right hand since the left side of the brain controls the right side of the body and visa versa?
Nerve damage. If you remember the scene in the beginning when he showered, you can see scars on his arm (probably from surgery to attempt to fix it).
