Why did the park rangers shoot the bear

They went into his area and shot him for doing what bears do, at least just shoot in the air

reply

Once a bear decides that what this bear does is eat people, it's time to shoot it.

reply

Apparently the bear was stalking the rangers. It also stalked the pilot, Willy Fulton, earlier.

Here's a quote from http://www.yellowstone-bearman.com/Tim_Treadwell.html: Ranger Ellis was standing with ranger Gilliland and Willy Fulton to his left. Ranger Dalrymple was slightly ahead of Gilliland when Gilliland suddenly yells, Bear! while pointing to the right. Ranger Ellis states that he turned and "saw an adult bear moving toward the group about 20 feet away". All four begin yelling in hopes that the bear would see them and move away. Ranger Ellis then states that he "perceived that the bear was well aware of their presence and was stalking them". Ranger Ellis, armed with a 40 cal. handgun begins to fire at about the same time rangers Gilliland and Dalrymple, who were each armed with 12 gauge shotguns loaded with slugs also begin to shoot at the bear.

I agree they should've tried to just scare the bear off. Timmy would not have wanted any bear killed.

This bear was indeed the killer as stomach contents proved. I read more detailed reports of the incident earlier today. The bear started a lunge from 20 feet away and was only stopped 12 feet from the rangers. It took eleven 40cal pistol shots and ten 12Ga slugs to stop him. That's 21 total shots. As one ranger commented "That was cutting it thin". With the smaller second bear a warning shot was fired but he kept coming as well. Once a bear kills a human or in this case two people it is a general policy to destroy the bear. The bears natural fear of people has been overcome and he has discovered that humans are prey like any other animal. He is not going to stop and go back to fish and berries. He is going for easy prey from then on. Sad when you think about it but Timothy Treadwell was directly responsible for two bears death.

No matter where you go "there you are".

reply

He wasn't directly responsible, he was indirectly responsible.

Same as if you felt like going out and camping then got eaten, then they shot the bear after.

The same way you probably suggest he shouldn't have been out there enticing the bears, but in a sense the same way you shouldn't have been camping close to bears?

reply

When people go camping they have no intention of fraternizing with bears of any kind but Timothy Treadwell went with the intention to fraternize, he even documented himself. Most people keep their distance from wild animals especially while camping but Treadwell didn't. He encroached on their living quarters as with the fox and intentionally got as close as he thought he could while grizzly bears were resting, eating, trying to catch their food etc. He was a menace to those beautiful but dangerous animals. The National Park officers do everything they can to protect human and animal lives. They provide bear proof trash cans, they keep on a constant look out for people who violate rules and do everything to keep people and bears apart from one another, to protect both species. But not Treadwell. He had misguided intentions and thought he was helping the bear when in reality, he hurt them more than any poacher. Because as many have posted here, anytime a bear kills a human, I say kill not attack, they have to be put down because of the risk to other humans it may encounter. Like the 2 bears that were killed when they tried to retrieve Treadwell and Miss Huguenard's bodies, the bears would not back off they kept coming towards the Rangers & pilot. Those 2 bears realized with treadwell's help, that humans are an easy food source. The death of those 2 bears in particular are laid squarely at Treadwell. He wouldn't have gotten himself & his friend killed if he wasn't there. Period.

That bear was stalking the park rangers for quite a while and rather menacing. I don't agree but that's why they shot it.

reply

Just because a bear has human remains in its stomach doesn't mean that the bear killed them.

I posted this in Feb 12 2013 There is more to it than the movie presented. The officers narrowly escaped attack themselves. From my previous post:

"The bear started a lunge from 20 feet away and was only stopped 12 feet from the rangers. It took eleven 40cal pistol shots and ten 12Ga slugs to stop him. That's 21 total shots. As one ranger commented "That was cutting it thin".

The bear lost its natural fear of humans and once that happens it will stalk and kill people as a prey animal. In Yellowstone for example once they find a hiker killed by a bear they post a ranger on a hill with a rifle overnight. Since bears return and feed multiple times on their kill it is a simple strategy that works well. Most hikers when in bear country follow the rules so encounters are rare. For instance it is forbidden to have a dog when hiking in bear country. Canines (dogs, wolves) are a natural prey animal and bears will actively hunt and kill them thereby endangering the hikers. When it comes to bears vs humans there is no contest. Bear always wins unless you are in a group that is armed to the teeth.

Yeah that's right, this bear that's out there in the middle of the wilderness killed a human, so in order to keep us safe, it needs to be put down. This wild bear is not safe to humans.

While we're at it, why don't we build a rail road from which we can shoot bears and buffalo, it'll make our lives a lot easier, and everybody will be a lot happier and safer.

Go USA.

reply

I'm pretty sure once a bear eats a human it's a death sentence. He did it at least twice.

reply

Just leave the bears alone! So what he killed humans. Hes eating meat that's all we are.

reply

Wow if you see other humans as just meat you're clearly a psychopath. The bear is just meat too, it'll be eaten by worms and flies, so why get upset over the bear?

They do the same with dogs that attack people, most animals stay away from humans, but once an animal has crossed a line and tasted human flesh it's considered dangerous, and sane people put humans above animals.

reply

A fed bear is a dead bear. It's the rules nature has worked out.

reply

Once a bear has tasted delicious human meat it gets the hunger. It has to get more delicious human meat. Like that tiger that killed all those railroad workers. Of course they discovered that bear had a bad tooth so it went from easier to chew flesh.
