The old chick with the pigtails stated that him killing himself was a "religious experience" is a total crackpot!
No wonder they received hate mail. However, the person who wrote into them saying that there should be bears on leftwing campuses, (or something to that effect), is also a crackpot.

I believe Timothy Treadwell wanted to die, but was too much of a coward to do it alone, so he decided to involve the bears and his girlfriend, which is a great tragedy.

WHY didn't someone do something? Clearly, he had mental problems.

You're right. He did have mental problems. And as for wondering why no one tried to get help for him, the answer to that is in the U.S., a seriously mentally ill person can refuse to take psych meds.

It depends on their condition, and we really don't know from the movie if anyone tried to intervene or "just let him do his thing."

I remember his ex-girlfriend Crystal said that he had been put on psych drugs (I think he had been diagnosed as bipolar), but he didn't like the way he felt.

In California, the laws state that a person cannot be put into hospitalized unless they are a danger to themselves or others.

The problem is basically that nothing will be done until the person either kill themselves or someone else.

I think he wanted to kill himself too and that's why he put himself at risk when he lived in the grizzly maze. He was waiting for the opportunity for one of the bears to kill him that's why he never took any kind of protection with him; no guns, no barred wire, no bear canisters to protect his food, no bear spray; absolutely nothing. He was deeply depressed and quite honestly I don't think he cared that he was putting his life at risk every day....
