Has anyone read any biographies on Casanova?

I read a bio on Casanova a year ago and this guy's life was certainly adventerous and had no boundaries as to who he bedded.

I did not know before reading this book that he had a daughter.

Yes, I've read his Memoirs and it's probably the best book I've read in the last five years.I disagree with you that there was no bounds to who he bedded. He was actually much more selective than the stereotype would suggest. I'm surprised that after reading his bio, you still seem to think this.Mind you, there are a whole load of terrible bios out there, milking only the allegedly "shocking" aspects of Casanovas life. You ought to go straight to the source and read his autobiography instead, trust me. If you look on amazon, most reviewers gave it a 5/5! Unlike what the stereotype suggested, casanova wasn't just after collecting random notches on his bedpost and a woman had to engage him intellectually in some way for him to be interested in bedding her.He was fascinated by women's thoughts, behaviour and feelings besides their looks and sex appeal.

People like John F. Kennedy, writer Georges Simenon, and Rolling Stone band member Bill Wyman all notoriously bedded 1000+ women in their lifetimes, and were probably less selective than Casanova in the process. Casanova mentions just over 100 in his autobiography, but academics agree he had just over 200 lovers in his entire life. There are countless other rockstars, actors, celebrities, etc who had much more debauched lives than Casanova. For some reason though, perhaps because we assume he lived in a sexual stone age, he fires our imagination more, and we think we was THE ultimate womaniser. As far as womanisers go, the man was an artist at least-his art of seduction was very refined, something you don't get a sense of just watching this mini-series.

Thanks for the reply. Very interesting.

I read in one place that he was fascinated with woman's thoughts... and in another that he would basically screw anything with legs, including the occasional man, and that he had so many illegitimate children he might have seduced his own daughter. I prefer the fascinated with woman version, though.

Yes I did read a biography where he has sex with a young girl who was his daughter. I never heard about him with men though.

I wouldn't bother with biographies and read his autobiography instead--everything you'd want to know about Casanova is there. Many biographers have agendas, trying to portray Casanova in one way or other other, which is why I would go straight to the source instead. Why are people so obsessed ONLY with who Casanova had sex with anyway? Yes, he was a libertine and did some questionable things, but there was much more to him besides the sexual aspect of his life.

He slept with another boy when he was put in a seminary as a young priest, before he was booted out of the church! It's in his autobiography.
