ok...so maybe its just me but wouldnt it be great if the lil Casanova mini series was another of those moments were the Doctor had put himself into the fob watch, making himself human.
I bet the tenth doc would be exactly like that! :D sighs!
Holy crap I never thought of it that way. David's portrayal totally reminded me of the Doctor but I never considered the idea of a fob watch incident. That's interesting although I'm not so sure the Tenth Doctor would be quite the man whore that Casanova is :)
Doctor: Is that the sort of man I am now? Am I rude? Rude and not ginger.
Haha...actually RTD saw Tennant in Casanova and loved him so much he asked him to play the Doctor :) fun fact!
But that would be awfully hillarious. Could you imagine Martha chasing after him, although, he'd do her too...I mean, anyone would do her, she's hot, and I'm a girl :D hahaha
Even more fun fact; it was actually RTD who was the writer and executive producer on Casanova, alongside Julie Gardner no less. Murray Gold even did the music too - Casanova is somewhat of a spiritual precursor to RTD's Doctor Who.
Russell offered David the part of the Doctor with the proviso that he played it the same way he played Casanova - he wanted the same personality; hence why the characters are quite similar. (Minus all the sex in the Doctor's case, of course.)
I actually figured that since I loved David Tennant's Doctor, I might actually be let down by Casanova - that maybe subconsciously I'd be expecting David Tennant playing the Doctor playing Casanova, even though Casanova was done first.
Instead, I can see why RTD wanted David Tennant for Doctor Who. He played the Doctor with the same passion, humor, and intensity that he played Casanova, and yet they were totally different performances. Although I respected David as an actor already, Casanova has raised my respect for him higher.
I now look forward with unabashed glee to seeing other roles in his repetoire:
The Last September (1999, co-starring Michael Gambon, Keeley Hawes, Maggie Smith) Sweetnightgoodheart (2001, with Kate Ashfield and Diana Hardcastle) Bright Young Things (2003, Tennant has a smallish part, but look at the leading cast: Michael Sheen, James McAvoy, Stockard Channing, Dan Ackroyd, Jim Broadbent) The Quartermass Experiment (2005, Jason Flemyng, Mark Gatiss, Indira Varma) Secret Smile (2005, Kate Ashfield - THIS one is especially looking good) Learners (2005, with fellow Whovians Jessica Hynes {who also wrote this one} and Shaun Dingwall) Hamlet (2009, Patrick Stewart)
And I look forward with great anticipation to The Decoy Bride and Fright Night.
So far from being a "meh" experience I enjoyed just because my favorite Doctor was in it, I truly loved Casanova, for David, for the rest of the cast, for the story, for the way it was put on screen, all of it!
David as Hamlet is one of his most amazing performances but Shakespeare is an acquired taste, I find. It's more an experience than enjoyment for me; something you want to see but not necessarily would want to see again.... if you get my meaning.
Have you already seen Einstein and Eddington? That's also very good. However, Casanova is firmly my favourite Tennant performance after the Tenth Doctor.
Thanks for the trivia on David being told to act the same. As a long ago drama student I was perplexed by the exact similarities between characters. Especially since his other work reflects different styles b/c of his enormous talent. Even when he's John Smith on Who there's not a glimmer of the Doctor in him. Excellent work!! Great info, period! Thanks!!
OMG! I neved thought it that way, sounds brilliant! And it would totally make sense!
Let's add the part that in the end when he's about to die, Edith makes him open the watch and then they get back to the Tardis? LOL!
Anyways, i LOVED David's performance, so amazing and excellent! It's the R-Rated version of the Doctor, haha. I'm now trying to watch most of his movies, can't get enough of him after I saw all the episodes of Dr. Who recently, and it brakes my heart knowing that it's over :(
Yes! i was able to get this at my library recently(to bad i never seem to meet any casanov's when im in the stacks though.. wonder why? maybe im only a 7/10(7inthe face but a 10 inthe arse)
Liked this even though im trying to stay away from deep love strories now because that David T. made it fun to watch it certainly had its funny moments and made me forget it was a soulmate love match(i knew he was playing dr.who but i have not seen any of his show appearances i think the last 1 i might have caught some episodes on was christopher eccleston)
SPOILER BELOW
At the end when he finds out who his daughter is & his son is about to incest/shag her the actress that played leonilda(?)Naomi Bentley for some reason i was wondering could she have done modeling as a child & did she perhaps play the love child(with the teddybear) of Terrence Trent D'arby & the model in that video SIGN YOUR NAME(ACROSS MY HEART)just wondering???????
