It's been a long time

It's been a long time since I made a comment on this movie and I notice that the same arguments are going around ... And around ... And around. I actually was reminded of a comment that someone made that real cellists would never play with their hair down. Watching old seasons of Fame, I noticed that the character who plays the cello never plays with her hair pulled back. It's an interesting fact because the actress really is a cellist.

Like this nitpicky fact most of these arguments are just a matter of opinion. Musicians who hate the music...or not, who believe in prodigies...or not, who believe it's a fairy tale ...or not. Non musicians who do the same...and a whole lot of folks of both persuasions calling each other nasty names because they can't respect another's opinion.

Sad ... Because this is a movie about transcending styles, forms, ideas, it's about starting from scratch and working to make yourself a better musician within the parameters of a story. It's not a documentary...

Thanks Sally!
I do the same thing on checking in on this movie. The ratings have held at a steady 7.5 which would translate roughly to 75% of the people liking it. IMDB calls this a "weighted average" which in my mind means that the numbers are weighted down somehow. Nobody understands the system but IMDB, but the point bis that MORE people like it than dislike it and those numbers have stayed rather consistent.
I am tired of listening to the same tired out arguments. Nothing new is brought to the table.
I saw the movie 25 times in a theater. Separate paid admissions. Yes I was lucky to have a second run theater which is gone now :(
I did it because I ENJOYED doing it and I enjoyed it EVERY time I saw it.
The purpose of a movie is to ENJOY IT!!!! Obviously most people ENJOYED IT so it has achieved its goal and purpose and served it rather well.
Apparently there are those who enjoy hating the movie. So much so that they continue to visit and stir up the same old arguments which serves no purpose whatsoever.
FIND MOVIES THAT YOU ENJOY and contribute to MEANINGFUL discussions.
If you have absolutely NOTHING better to do then continue the same old trite stuff about this movie but don't expect me to wast time reading it. You can never make me regret the 25+++++++++++++++++++++ etc times I have seen it.

So true, so true.I can say that about all the boards of my favorite movies/shows. Why can't we talk about something else? I like this movie too, I realize how some musicians might find August's musical prowess cringeworthy or even comical, but to say its offensive and makes kids think they can just pick up an instrument and be good at it is kind of out there(this is coming from a musician). And anyway, there are a lot of stories about people picking up instruments and becoming skilled quickly. I remember hearing about a guy who hit his head and can now play the piano very well. And if you're a Christian like me, you might've heard stories of people receiving an anointing for a particular instrument and playing it well. That's what I think happened for August, and there is a lot of spiritual content(learning the organ in the church, etc) to support it.

Wildcattin'...Wildcattin'. Pow! I'm gonna go.

bjamzilla, I agree with you and the others who commented. There are people who exist that can hear music and pick it up right away. It's not going to happen for everyone but gifted people do exist who can display a talent without much practice whereas everyone else has to work harder to learn it and some may never get it. It's the same with singers, artist who draw, craft, etc or writers. Also, as you said, some people receive an anointing.
