i don't buy Lyla's shyness

At the party in the beginning of the film, Lyla seems too shy to join in the dancing. She's a very pretty girl and normally such pretty girls have all the confidence fed to them by the people around them. I do understand that her proficiency in cello playing comes from a lot of discipline in practicing at home and that might limit her social life to an extent. All in all, though, I just don't buy it. Have you ever known such a pretty girl to be so shy?

Yes

I've met plenty of shy individuals who are also extremely pretty.

yep.

There's more to attraction than meets the eye.

First of all, pretty girls can definitely be shy. Girls have a nasty habit of not believing compliments.

Second, she seems more introverted than shy to me. She didn't seem like she wanted to join in, but was afraid to; she looked like she wasn't interested at all. And then she sought out a place where she could take a breath without being surrounded by party-goers.

Please don't feed the trolls.

I didn't see as being shy, but sheltered from the common social experiences of her peers. She wanted be a part of the mix but seemed overwhelmed by the reality. She sought a quiet place to get away. She definitely wasn't shy on the roof. I've known pretty people, girls and guys, like her.

I don't think she was shy, just a reserved and "serious" type of person. Pretty or not, she wasn't the average young woman. She was a gifted classical musician rather than a party girl or someone with a cheerleader personality. Introspective people do tend to seek out a quiet spot to be.

And pretty girls totally can be shy. Not every pretty girl even knows the impact she has on others visually, especially if being deliberately alluring and sexy is not her focus in life, as it wasn't for this person.

It's stereotyping to assume that all pretty women are always confident and sure of themselves and know they have it going on. Life experiences shape who we are and what we are like, not so much our appearance.

This ↗ We live in the era of the Kardashians where everyone is judged by their looks or the amount of money they have. Therefore if you are pretty, you must have positive qualities. The character should be confident because she is pretty which means a girl who is not so pretty should not be confident. That is really messed up. Plus shyness and confidence are not opposites.
