Completely agree.
Sometimes we don't fully appreciate an artist until after their death - as in the case of Robin Williams passing this month.
I took all the more interest in watching his performance - and he really nailed it - just the right balance; a layered and unique portrayal.

The character indeed could have been very creepy, but thankfully the movie didnt go down a road with the kids being abused. I agree that they were exploited but they were protected at the same time. Being on the streets, certainly could have put them in far more danger. They were able to be creative and in the sense of the word, earn their shelter from a world that could have been far more abusive.
It could have been so easy to hate his character, but we saw some human emotion and frailty in him and some sense of order and discipline and structure in the world he created for the homeless kids.
