Muted, low contrast, scene when the pretend to take the kid home?

What's the deal with the poor film quality when they take the kid out to he dessert?It doesn't match the rest of the movie. It was suppose to be a night scene, was it shot during the day then they put a filter on it post production? Really poorly done.
