Awful short

I watched this last night and was appalled that it was even nominated, let alone won, the academy award. I am not offended by the language or violence, but am offended by the hackneyed, amateurish writing and awful, teeth-grinding performance by the young man on the train. I was very surprised to learn that the writer/director is an award-winning playwright. Either his plays are a lot more intelligent or the British aren't too picky about their theater. Granted, the Academy's picks for shorts are usually dubious and tend to favor big-name actors (Gleason was pretty good at least), but this film seems like what a 14-year-old boy would pick for best short. In fact, it seems like a fourteen-year-old wrote and directed it.

What exactly was "hackneyed" about the writing? I can honestly say I've never seen another film anything like this. I thought the kid's performance was exactly what was required of the role. What bothered you about him? I also thought it was pretty intelligent. In a half hour film, a number of themes were established and dealt with and pretty well tied up by the end of it. I was really impressed.

there's no place you can be that isn't where you're meant to be.

One of the funny things about the film is that it IS kind of like a fourteen year old wrote it. But at the same time it's like a fifty year old whose wife just died wrote it, and it's also like a 25 year old movie buff/existentialist/absurdist wrote it.

It's a fantastic pastiche!

There, there, David. There's one for the each of us.

"British aren't too picky"

Way to understand geography, American. Ireland is not Britain.

Watch In Bruges and see if you're surprised that Martin McDonagh is an award winning playwright.

On Netflix instant if you have that. Worth $10 for the blu-ray if not.
