The premise of the movie (spoilers)

It's been a few years since the last time I saw this movie, but it seems to me that the whole movie builds on a weird premise. Why, if someone owes you (a mobster) money, would you immediately kill him, and not make him work for you or something? It just seems weird.

It takes a certain type of individual to be a henchman. It's probably a classic case of "don't send a boy to do a man's job." If I recall correctly, I believe they killed Max so quickly not because he lost, but because they wanted to send a message regarding placing bets on fixed races.

OK. It's been a few years since I've seen it.

He was being made an example of by the new guys.

They wanted to show that if you try to get in on their schemes, your family dies with you. The murder had nothing to do with the debt.

Right.
