Randall and Dante's friendship would be over

Does no-one realise that Randall and Dante's friendship would officially be over once Randall says "I love you." Their whole friendship dynamic would change. They couldn't talk to each other, it would be always awkward.

reply

No it wouldn't.

I think you might be thinking Randall meant that in a gay way, but he didn't. They have been friends for 20+ years. It was all about a deep friendship, almost brotherly type love.

I hate IMDB's Signature policy...

reply

No, you homophobe.

My friends and I have said it to each other a lot, and we're not awkward because we're adults.

Let's be bad guys.

It's nothing to do with being gay (I obviously get that Randall is not gay), it's that he is not the kind of guy to say "I love you" to a friend. The friendship is all good-natured ribbing and slagging each other off - that's their dynamic. Actually expressing his love for his friend would doom the friendship.

reply

Not at all. Even watching the first one, you can tell Randall cares about Dante. Saying I love you didn't ruin the friendship at all. It reinforced it.

Let's be bad guys.

The whole point of the film is that they're finally growing up. For Randall, it's about finally taking responsibility and for Dante it's about making his own choices over what he thinks he's "supposed" to do.

They've essentially been avoiding adulthood for a decade.

You must live in an alternate reality.

I don't love her.. She kicked me in the face!!

reply

Yeah it heavily depends on the relationship and type of friendship. I say it to my pals all the time but only because we know we can

reply

Yeah I just watched it again, you are way off base on this. I don't think much of anybody got that impression. They're friendship has spanned decades, and even in the first film you got the sense that Randall cared more about Dante than most 'friends' do. I think Dante always knew and understood how much Randall values his friendship, and perhaps he was afraid to admit how much he really loves Randall. But hearing him say it wouldn't queer (no pun intended) their relationship.

In any case, such a great scene. One of the best from Smith. I really hope Clerks 3 works out. I'd love to see another chapter for those two.
