was the actors legs really that skinny or what? How did they do that

CGI effects, partly. Kenneth Branagh's legs are not really like that at all.

His lips, however, really are that skinny.

That is the reason I looked up the movie. Very convincing. My grandfather is in post-polio (PPS) and his left leg is truly a leg bone wrapped with skin. Very good effects and the movie is excellent.

The DVD audio comentary says the legs were a real polio persons in the pool, prosthetics in the wheelchair (Ken's legs under the chair) and when Helena was manipulating them etc and CGI other times. Amazing isn't it?

hbo spares no expense making movies. And even moreso, doesn't need to edit for content either.
