I couldn't believe what I was hearing. Dorothy will only wear the shoes if they'll make her sexy. I turned it off and cooled off for a month. I thought I could just mute the movie when that part came on again. There was just too much sexy and hot for me to continue. Maybe I'll let her watch it when she turns 18, until then, "sexy" is not allowed in our house. I think the Muppets could have come up with a more creative way to say she'd be beautiful or pretty but I just can't think about Dorothy as a sex symbol. Shame on those dirty Muppets!
I think he was being facetious when he said not till 18. you must admit it is a little ridiculous to have someone talking about being sexy in a kids movie. I was a bit taken aback by it too...when she gets in some machine and the weird little muppet says "I thought you were going for the hot and sexy...look.." or something like that. If you have young kids they say things they hear, and who wants a four year old playing with her little freinds saying "I'm sexy, I'm sexy" it is inappropriate. and sexy is not, IMHO a completely harmless word. it means porvocative, trying to have sex... anyway. I think it is a little rude of you to call him ignorant and sad...it is his and his wife's choice, and you have no right to be so rude.
Sexy is a perfectly acceptable word! When you say to someone "wow you look sexy", does it mean you want to make love to them? Get real! I don't know why people make too much of this...Yeah, I too hate when kids are pushed to grow up unnaturally, but I just don't understand the prudes - there are so many worse things out there...
There are three kinds of people in the world: Those who can do maths, and those who can't.
Yes I want to have sex with sexy females. In that vein I will not call a child sexy. Cute, attractive, good looking are fine, but Sexy? To a child? No.
There were a lot of bizarre references that seemed out of place in a Muppets film. For instance:
That prawn fiddles with knobs on Gonzos chest...Gonzo then says theyre his nipples
Somebody (possibly that prawn...I dont really keep up with my Muppets so I dont know his name) makes a reference to the Girls Gone Wild series
"What happens in Oz stays in Oz" is mentioned. Obvious sleazy connotations with the Las Vegas phrase.
Dorothy goes to the "makeover machine" in a conservative dress and comes out dressed like a whore. The Muppets are really enthusiastic about this to the point of creepy Muppet sexual excitement. Then somebody says "NOW youre ready to see the Wizard" as though the Wizard is some kind of pedophile who will only see young girls who wear low cut tops.
Undoubtedly some other things. Im watching it now in the UK and not really paying attention so I surely missed a few. The idea of Fozzie getting an erection while looking at Dorothy post-makeover machine is pretty revolting, though.
Oh wait. I missed the most best (worst) one. Gonzo mentions that his girlfriend is a chicken and the prawn says "what a weirdo" or something. Beastiality joke there. And then later Gonzo sees Oz who is depicted as a large breasted woman who then turns into a chicken saying "does your girlfriend have a great big beak like this...and large wings like these" and its obviously a reference to her jugs.
Nobodys even talking about "political correctness". Who is it whos controlling the discourse determining what is and what isnt "political correct" anyway? Im talking about a childrens film (a pretty bland one, by the way) that has a ridiculous amount of innappropriate lines in it. Kids might not get the chicken fornication reference, but theyll certainly have some inkling about the "Girls Gone Wild" reference, they may very well see the "witch slap" half-joke, and theres absolutely no missing the woman with the big tits. Im not a Victorian era school marm but clearly none of this should have been in the film.
yea, the witch slap joke! i thought they said bitch slap until i read the subtitles (i had just got off the phone and i had put the subtitles on whilst on the phone - good job i did else i really would have been complainin!)
Gonzo has had a relationship with Camilla the chicken since the show began. Thats not beastiality, its just a silly joke that has been running for a very long time.
I know the joke has been going on since it started and I dont have a problem with that. But the "weirdo" comment seemed to suggest the old chicken fornication taboo.
i watched a couple of hours ago on channel5 and seemed to miss many of the above parts, such as what happens in oz stays in oz and fozzie getting and erection? i was also kinda surprised by it, i came on this site to find out the rating of it as i didnt think it could possibly be a U or owt!!
Fozzie doesnt get an erection (or if he does it was off camera). I was just talking about the part where the Muppets are overly excited to see Dorothy after she gets out of the makeover machine dressed like a prostitute.
1. Arousing or tending to arouse sexual desire or interest. 2. Slang. Highly appealing or interesting; attractive: “The recruiting brochures are getting sexier” (Jack R. Wentworth).
sexi·ly adv. sexi·ness n.
sexy
adj 1: marked by or tending to arouse sexual desire or interest; "feeling sexy"; "sexy clothes"; "sexy poses"; "a sexy book"; "sexy jokes" [ant: unsexy] 2: exciting sexual desire [syn: aphrodisiac, aphrodisiacal] [ant: anaphrodisiac]
So yes, if you tell somoeone they look sexy it means that they will arouse sexual desire in someone. maybe not you, but someone. this has nothing to do with political correctness. it is about putting things that are inappropriate for children in a childrens movie. the muppets have always used funny little double entendres to make their movies more interesting for adults, but this is pushing that a little too far.
DO you know the difference between the words denotation and connotation? Maybe the literal definition means to be arousing, but it has come to be a lot less strong of a word than that. (YOu also completly ignored the second defintion) It is kind of like the word gay. It used to be harmless word that meant to be having fun, now it is a word about sexuality, becuase society changed the meaning. Same thing with sexy, only the word has become less serious, as opposed to becoming more serious.
Forget for a minute about them using "sexy". What about Rizzo talking about American Girls Gone Wild? What the hell kind of way is that to talk on a KIDS movie? Then the kids are going to ask 'Mom, what's that?' and what are they going to tell them? You can't very well tell a small child about stuff like that. I just don't get it, where has the Muppet magic gone? Jim Henson started this whole thing, and he was terrific, then his son took over and he did allright too, but these last couple of movies were NOT VERY GOOD AT ALL. I mean do you really think I'm going to show my kids this movie? Hell no, I'll show them the Muppet Show, the Muppet Babies, The Muppet Movie, the Great Muppet Caper, The Muppets take Manhattan, the Tale of the Bunny Picnic, Sesame Street (the earlier episodes), and Muppet Treasure Island, BUT NOT THIS!
Look, I act and make films with strong adult matter all the time and even I was shaken at some of the content!! Now, the people arguing over the “sexy” part; The person saying that “sexy” doesn’t have that kind of meaning anymore and is totally fine being used in a children’s movie is only right to a certain extent because his/her morals are low. This person thinks this way because his/her values are descending with the rest of the world that the subject of “sex” in a children’s movie isn’t bad because the idea of sex on a 5yr olds brain is totally fine. Here I am, a 22yr old male that acts in rated ‘R’ movies saying that this movie was an example that morals in this country are falling in a slippery slope and that this film should not be shown to anyone under the age of 12. You don’t want your 7 yr old sitting in the living room and seeing a commercial for “girls gone wild” do you? Then what’s the difference if they see it being discussed by the Muppets!!! None!! Totally inappropriate!!
"Sexy" is not a bad word, there are also explanations for every other thing on that movie...
1) the nipple joke was just a joke to explain what the bolts were for, men don't have to hide they're nipples from the world not even puppet men.
2)the osborne thing was a simple delay from being too forward. Low dresses are common in females and Shanti wears them alot so they aren't related to the wizard wanting to "check her out"
3) you need a lack of humor to find a fault in this movie, as long as the kids don't know what some of the gags mean it's perfectly okay.
4) the poppyfeild's approach happens to be a drug that all poppys have but isn't strong enough to put you to sleep until you enhance it, a club is a good approach to pull it off since walking through a real feild would be time consuming and boring.
and 5)oviously,no one saw the rating on the movie box warning you about the content.
people like you make me wonder why you bother, why can't you be like the kids here who ignore people like you?
Yeah right!forget about porn!forget about R rated movies!Forget about Deep throat! Forget about the F word, coarse language or profanity! This is the dirtiest, sleaziest movie ever made! It's the most controversial film ever made also!(yeah, right!)
I guess that ABC(or whatever channel aired it)forgot to write this warning before airing it: THIS MOVIE DEALS WITH MATURE SUBJECT MATTER AND IS RECOMMENDED FOR A MATURE AUDIENCE ONLY. PARENTAL GUIDANCE IS STRONGLY ADVISED.
If we ever catch a priest with this movie in his dvd collection, it will be a scandal of enormous proportions!!
Apparently there's a whole church congregation who just viewed this film and are commenting it on this very board!
And if you liked this movie,sorry... but you're going straight to hell! And if you didn't catch all the sexual innuendoes it's because you were blinded by the darkness! Of course, what else! (At least, this is the kind of mental thinking that seems to be in profusion on this board.)
Well, anybody who thinks this replaces GIRLS GONE WILD will be very disappointed.
The fact is that this is not a very good MUPPETS film anyway.
I agree that I too was shocked at the claim that the shoes made her feel sexy and confident, but surely you are protecting your child too much if you wont let her watch any movie with the word sexy in it until she is 18... Does this mean she will only be able to rent or watch kids movies her entire teenage life?! I'm 20, and I don't believe that any of the films I watched as a kid (including the terrible Police Academy; which contains MUCH more hardcore referances to sex than the muppets) made me a bad person or had bad influences on me. Obviously I watched only what my parents let me when I was a child, but I remember watching Terminator2 and loving it when i was only about 10. Yes age ratings are there on films for a reason, but as long as the parents are open enough with their kids to explain things to them then i don't see a problem with for example letting a 13 yr old watch a 15 rated film. The fact that the muppets have slipped in quite a few risque jokes in this film DOES make me question the U age rating, and this is by far one of the least subtle movies when it comes to double entendre's (spelling!?!), particularly the poppies in the nightclub...Can anyone say Opium Den?! Overall i agree that this movie had slightly too many sexual undertones to it, so much so that it kinda scared me. I'm one of these people that think 'Bratz' Dolls are the anti-christ, and anyone that buy's a 'slut-in-a-box' should probably get their head checked, but theres a difference between giving a child a toy to play with for extended periods and a 3 second clip in a movie that can be explained rationally by a parent or guardian.
Different kids react differently to movies, TV shows, and video games. I've been watching R-rated movies my whole life, and I'm not a criminal, I don't cuss very often, so I don't think they affected me in a negative way.
I distinctly remember one instance that I feel shaped me as a kid, when it came to movies, TV shows, and video games. I was playing Mortal Kombat with my dad. Blood was flying everywhere, as it did. My dad said, "You know this isn't how real-life works, right?" I said, "yes." Because I did know, I just didn't think about it until that point. And I always remembered that whenever I watched any movie, played any game, etc.
Kids don't have to be affected negatively by this stuff, I really feel that all it takes is something as simple as this from a parent. Unfortunately, parents would rather forgoe their responsibility and sit the kids in front of the TV, where the nanny-state government can censor shows and make sure their precious children aren't seeing anything naughty.
Explaining movies, video games, and TV shows to children is infinitely healthier than trying to pretend it doesn't exist and sheltering them (at which point, they'll go on to junior high school and will be in for quite a reality check).
I say let the kids watch it, and explain the jokes to them. You might not want them to know that sex exists, but trust me, they'll be more intelligent, more "in tune" with the world, and generally better off in the future.
There is absolutely NO reason that parents have to be explaining to little itty bitty children about Girls Gone Wild because one of the Muppets talked about it. Of all the things people can excuse, the sexy comment, the nipple joke, you CANNOT excuse Rizzo talking about AGGW finding plenty of women with talent.
I'm not saying that. Obviously, some things aren't appropriate - hardcore porn, what GGW is, for example - and shouldn't be explained yet. I'm saying that trying to shelter a child from everything isn't good for the child, or for society.
The Muppet Movie has a reference to female oral sex about three minutes in. (Immediately following Rainbow Connection) So... uh, maybe you have always been offended by The Muppets.
Oh give me a break, I've seen the Muppet Movie I don't know how many times. What do you hear after the Rainbow Connection? A man calling for help, alligators, Hollywood...what the hell do you mean by reference?
I think you may be overreacting a bit. Have you ever been to a pantomime? The amount of double entendres relating to sex is unbelievable! And yet children have been going to those for years and haven't been affected by them or even understood them. I didn't even realise how potentially rude they can be until I went to one recently with my little sisters, so obviously when I saw them as a child I didn't notice or understand. Also, I used to watch the Carry On films all the time and they had no bad affect on me or my siblings. I agree it's up to the parent on what they show their children, but some of the things people are pointing out I don't think children would pick up on - and if they do it probably means they'll have been exposed to the subject before.
And just what in the hoozits is the matter with saying purty or nice? Those ain't curse words, those don't go putting any unwanted ideas into kids' heads like sexy and Girls Gone Wild do.
I think what you all are forgetting is that the muppets were NEVER created for children in the first place. The show and movies have ALWAYS been aimed at an older audience. Just because it's done with puppets or as a cartoon doesn't automatically make it a kids movie. I think South Park and others have proven that. All of you complainers should screen the movies before you let your children watch. Look at the movies in the past and tell me you weren't expecting something for grownups. If you look back on all the old movies and you see them as meant for children maybe you should give your head a shake.
I personally grew up watching the muppets and when I was younger i didn't get a lot of it, but watching the movies as I grew and matured I have caught many jokes and subtleties I missed when I was younger. All new kids movies are being created to entertain children as well as adults and you need to remember that watching these movies with an innocent mind will not have you picking up on the same things we as grown ups see. For example until children are taught prejudice or anything like that they dont see it.
Very clever 666, except it is very different to use nuance and subtlety versus thrusting a half dressed women with large breats in front of the screen and brag about her large wings. Not to mention the not-so-subtle direct references to nipple rubbing and Girls Gone Wild.
Come on.... the Muppets are on Sesame Street. They are by no means adult. If you want pornographic puppets, I am sure there is something out there for you, but let's not encourage the debasement of the same characters that entertain little kids Saturday morning on PBS.
Finally, somebody who knows about TV. There are many jokes in these shows that adults find very funny, but leave kids clueless... it wasn't made for them. There are many that still think Simpsons is a kids show because it is a cartoon.
