The music didn't *quite* work, for me

Due to a fairly recent interest in French royal history, I rented this film as I clearly remembered all the promo for it back when it was released and although it wasn't of much interest to me then, I was still a little intrigued by it.

Anyways, although I completely disagree with the majority of the criticisms the film received - namely the soundtrack and the slight 'modernisation' of it - the music didn't really work, IMO. Not because it wasn't a typical classical score; on the contrary, I think it's a great way of making a film in this genre appeal to younger/modern audiences, and it's also a refreshing change of pace. I mean, let's be honest, how many by the book period dramas have we had over the years? Why not have some fun with them and interpret them in different ways?

However, the reason why I wasn't sold on the music in the film is because it didn't quite match up to the visual - the production design and the editing, namely. Although certain sequences ('I Want Candy' for example) were what you would call stylised, I don't think the film was stylised enough. For the most part, it felt like a regular period movie that just happened to have an 80s soundtrack, i.e. there wasn't much synchronisation. Had the film, visually, been more stylised - a bit more 'technicolour on steroids' or something - along with sharper editing, I feel it might've worked better.

I did enjoy the film, however. A lot. But this was a minor quibble.

I agree completely. The music seemed to call for similar visual stylisation that it largely lacked.

I think you make a good point. I give this an 8/10 but it could have been even better if more of it had been like the beginning. The all night party scenes came close though.
