I go from thinkig it's a masterpiece to thinking it's absolute garbage
I don't think Sofia Coppola is talented at all, typical case of nepotism, and her film betrays her intentions. She says she wanted to humanize Marie Antoinette, but all she did was further dehumanize her. She did, I've asked people about this movie and all they say is that she was frivolous, which is the exact message Coppola wanted not to send, her words, not mine. So her lack of talent makes her unable to make a competent movie. There is just so much that she missed, and so much that went over the audience's head. And it went over their heads because Sofia failed to tell a story. I got all the references in the film because I am a Marie Antoinette fan and has read all the books, so I know that when she says "tell the jeweler to stop sending me diamonds" is a reference to the affair of the necklace, but for other audience members it's just another blonde comment or something. Nobody should be required to read any book or see anything else before watching a movie. The movie needs to tell a story that stands on its own and that anyone can comprehend. Otherwise the director has failed. So this movie is a failure.
On the other hand, if we just accept its style, the movie paints a perfect picture, and even a perfect portrait of her, if you are knowledgeable. And I've always said that all masterpieces are perfect so in that way it feels like a masterpiece, but I can't consider it as such because I just know Sofia Coppola had no idea what she was doing.
