To clarify and add ~ it was Cheryl Pepsi Riley who is best known for her music in the 80's / 90's who was singing for the mother.
I actually downloaded this song and on the version I have Tamela Mann (who played Cora ~ the other choir member singing) does the part of her lines and the daughters as well. I always thought that perhaps they recorded the song prior to the movie and once the movie decided to showcase this mother/daughter singing that they decided to change up Tamela's singing to allow the daughter (Tiffany Evans) to have a musical role.

More clarification the woman who dubbed the singing voice of Debrah aka Cheryl Pepsi Riley sang two other songs in the movie. She sang One of Us and she sang Ain't it funny along with Heather Bradley
