I just started watching the show and I cant figure out if Envy is a boy or a girl. Does any one know the answer?

I figured Envy didn't know (Envy did say he/she couldn't remember their original body), so kept an androgynous form.

I've just finished both the original and BH. In original, he's male (his true identity get's revealed). In BH, he's neither (he's kind of a slug thing).

He is not a real human but an emotion willed into flesh by his originator Father.
So it really does not matter.
His preference in both animes seems to be a boyish form though. But actually he could be anything ( the other homunculi aswell ) if he wanted to be. In brotherhood his true form is revealed as a spineless worm. Which fits 'Envy' both literally and figuratively.
All he wanted to be was like the rest. To have friends and family, he is jealous of Ed having a brother and friends and of Hohenheim for having offspring. At this moment the true motive of Father ( since he actually is a part of him ) is also revealed.
His ability to transform comes from the Sin of 'Envy'. Father cast away his emotions and Carnal Sins and also his Envy. Envy is his will to be like others or thinking you should have what others have because you think you have more right to have it.
Father was actually envious of Hohenheim being a real free human, which probably is why he wanted to look like him and made all of his emotions he wanted to get rid of as his humanoid 'children'. All to gain something he could not have. Envy next to Greed and Pride is actually one of the strongest emotions Father had while being with Hohenheim, which is why he is so prominent in the story. After he got rid of his will to become like Humans he wanted to become like God all while ignoring the laws of Balance Alchemy.
