I am confused

Hi. So i just finished episode 38 and well i am pretty confused as to just what is going on. Now obviously i still have a bunch of episodes left plus the film but i was just wondering if someone could answer a couple of things without spoiling anything.

1. When Ed and Al have their first encounter with Lust and Gluttony, in lab 5, Ed apparently gets a huge power boost from standing in the liquid philospher stone, but since then he's pretty much had his ass handed to him. I don't want to know exactly what this means but was that just a random occurence or does it come into play at some point? In the first season it seemed like Ed was pretty powerful and badass but he hasn't really done much since then, except Greed.

2. There seem to be so many different storylines going on at this point that it's hard to keep track. There was one episode titled The Flame Alchemist, and the intro seemed to suggest it was going to reveal alot about the Colonel, but it was just a total filler style episode (although admittedly it was quite funny). I guess what i am asking is, with not a great deal of episodes left, plus the film, it seems they have to cover alot in a short space of time. Does it all tie up nicely in the end?

3. Not exactly relevant to anything but what happened to Ed's awesome red coat with the symbol? Since about episode 31/32 he never wears it. He looks much cooler with his red coat.

Anyway i am really enjoying this so far and i suppose i really should just keep watching instead of asking these questions, but iv'e just watched about 15 in a row so taking a break.

One last thing, i do plan on watching Brotherhood after i am done with this. I have heard it's much better for the most part. Is it the same story? Same characters? All i know is the same voice actor plays Ed (i watch the dubbed version)

Thanks for any answers and please, don't spoil anything major (a minor teaser or nudge is fine)

Ed's power boost in Lab 5 was due to contact with the PS liquid. It wore off shortly afterwards. Edward's accomplishments were due to fighting humans; against Homunculus is a different ball game (and Greed was to a disadvantage due to his remains being being present).
It's been a while since I saw the series, but I was under the impression Edward still wore his red coat mostly up to that point (once the 40s episodes come, he dumps it).
As for the ending, you might have to find out for yourself, but I will say nicely is a strong word.
As for BROTHERHOOD, the same story up to Greed kidnapping Al (with some different story tweaks during that coverage; Winry's parents get a different murderer, the brothers' relationship with Hughes and Nina are rather short); then it takes a different route with new characters, similar characters with different characterizations, etc.

Thanks for the reply. I finished the series just last night so in the end i guess i answered my own questions, but i appreciate the response nonetheless. And yeah, after about episode 38/39 i never saw his red coat again - no biggie but he did look much cooler with it on. The last few episodes were really great and quite emotional, although i have yet to watch the movie sequel, so looking forward to finding out what happens next.

Then on to Brotherhood which i am quite looking forward to :)

Thanks
