If you listen to the director's commentary by David Ayer, you'll hear him discuss that it was originally titled "The Night Watchman" because it's a reference to Tom Ludlow doing his "dirty work" and usually only working at night, protecting people from the horrors in the world. There's another part where Santos gives Ludlow lip about getting all the credit. Ludlow says "I did you a solid, Santos... You wanna be a killer? You want to see their faces every night?" Remember, in the restaurant scene, Wander says "if you showed up during the day, you'd know who your enemies were." Also, when Biggs drives up and sees Diskant and Ludlow together, he asks "Back on the night watch, Tom??" followed by Ludlow's explanation that the suits hate him but they need him because he'll do the things that nobody else will.
The Night Watchman would've been an awesome title. It was changed because Watchmen went into production and people were getting confused and thinking that Keanu was going to be part of that movie as well.
I hope this helps.
