I have come across a polarized divide concerning Keanu Reeves: People hate him, people love 'em, with little in between. I used to consider him a flat actor who somehow landed in the starring roles of films that tend to actually be very entertaining.
A film though that redefined how I construe Reeves is his performance in A Scanner Darkly. For those who actually want to see Reeves suffer a breakdown, with a very accurate facial expression, then do see this movie. A Scanner Darkly is more of an intellectual movie, based on an incredibly profound novel.
It proved to me that yes, this guy does have emotions, and yes, he is capable of portraying anger and sadness quite well. Arguably, it is the roles he is given that he is allowed little leniency to convey extreme emotions. For example, as Neo in The Matrix, is he not supposed to play a man whose world has, quite literally, been completely redefined (who would not go "woah" or "what the f---?" in this type of situation?)
His acting is, to a comedic point at times, very wooden. I recently watched Johnny Mnemonic and without doubt his character is very corny. It is neat though that Reeves admits himself that he is not the best of actors, which shows humbleness on his part. Anyways, I am not for or against the man in particular. I enjoy his movies & that is all that matters, isn't it?
In fact most Hollywood actors are either gay or bisexual! You have no idea.
Hey! Don't involve us in your sexual fantasies dude. We don't mind if you're gay--that's cool...but go suck some d!ck already and stop beating around the bush (no pun).

I like the rant on the garbage..."I want ROOM SERVICE*! I want the club sandwich, I want the cold Mexican beer, I want a $10,000-a-night hooker! I want my shirts laundered... like they do... at the Imperial Hotel... in Tokyo."
Its actually a really cool premise and William Gibson is one of the greatest sci-fi writers of all time.

That's everything in the end. After all, what do critics really know? They panned Led Zeppelin when they started out. Same with Dr. Strangelove and 2001 Space Odyssey.
I'm starting to have a few doubts about some critics. A couple of times there Ebert's carefully avoided panning some movies in the past and fell back on simply describing what goes on in the movie without giving his opinion on it.
I think Hollywood is trying to screw us over sometimes--I'm not sure why. Maybe making a for sure flop is a good income tax deduction.
What I like about Keanu movies and am finding out with every movie I see is that he's got alot of range, he's subtle, and so far, in every movie I've seen him in he brings his A-game to it. He picks cool projects and really gets into the whole character he portrays. He doesn't sell out. He doesn't compromise his integrity. He's not doing Japanese Nescafe commercials. He's not going to do a wacky hijinks movie for the exposure. He doesn't seem to have a lead man mentality and will take a supporting role in a good movie. He can also carry a movie on his back and if it doesn't seem to click sometimes, its due to some intangible thing that couldn't be predicted beforehand if all the elements were in place--good script, good director, good special effects, good stunts, good story, good casting--but some may not be considered blockbusters on the face of it. It happens. He's not a sell-out--is what I'm trying to say--which makes him the most un-Hollywoodish actor in the business.
joolztoolz, I agree with you 100%. Keanu may not be the best actor in the world but he's a solid actor with integrity and grace. His acting is unique and people tend to not understand that how he acts in his roles are different from they've seen before. A lot of his movies are cool, funny, interesting and endearing. He never fails to interest his fans and the audience. Whether his roles are the lead, supporting or small, he steals the show. And you're right. He is like the most un-Hollywoodish actor in the business. I stopped listening to the critics a long time ago. They're irrelevant most of the time and don't know what they're talking about. The other thing that's great about him is that he doesn't seem like has a big ego and misbehave like some of these other actors. He's professional and humble.
