Great premise, great actors, but a terrible movie

It must be the script or the directing, but every line spoken felt wrong, and the actors (normally great) felt like they don't know how to act. Some scenes were rushed, some dragged, some seemed missing.

I got this movie because of Hugh Laurie, but not even he couldn't save it.

Couldn't agree with you more. James Elroy is a great writer, but only when he writes period dialogue, like in the 50's like L.A confidential or Black Dalia. But when he try's to write contemporary material it comes out lame.
