Rubbish !!!!

Sorry but it was

The last episode has been on TV and I can honestly say that I really enjoyed the first episode - I thought it was hillarious, so I was looking forward to my Friday nights.

But I noticed that with each passing week, it got less and less funny. And they topped it all off with an episode that didn't even raise a titter.

Overall - it was crap - stick to writing phoenix nights.

Overall, I think most people on here will disagree with you. The series was, imo, good, not great, but good. What the series did well was the banter between Max and Paddy. Patrick McGuiness has improved greatly as a comic actor and can leave the series pleased with his efforts. Peter Kay's performance was also very good as the complex character of Max. What the series lacked was strong secondary characters. Phoenix nights had them in spades. Max and Paddy had, imo, very few. Overall, a good effort and a good deal better than I expected.
Finally, I just like to say how refreshing it is to have someone wait until watching an entire series before slagging it off. Most, including some on here, were writing this series off after the first episode.

I thought the last episode was the funniest of the lot, and the first one was a little disappointing. I actually felt it got BETTER as it went on! Ah well, each to their own!

I've been a fool but you know I wouldn't kill for you...

I absolutely loved that psycho Billy in the last episode. If it wasn't for him, it would have been a lot worse. Stuff such as the "miracle child" and TV soundtrack stuff was brilliant.

reply

It OK, not as good as Phoenix though. I think the comment about secondary characters is true.

You are WRONG! the best British Sitcom since 'Nights, which in it's self was the Best british Sitcom since Father Ted, and then Only fools. Great sitcoms are often few and far between these days, but max and Paddy is surly one of the best.

You are WRONG! the worst Brithish Sitcom since 'Nights. Can't believe how dissapointing this was compared with both Phoenix Nights and That Peter Kay Thing . The ditching of Phoenix Nights co writers Dave 'Jerry Dignan' Spikey and Neil 'Ray Von' Fitzmaurice really shows in Road To Nowhere's lacking of any interesting, funny, or remotely memorable characters - Kay and McGuinness are out on their arses!

Hi, I'm new to this but i had strong feelings about Max and Paddy when i watched it and needed to express them. I thought the series was awful, i thought the plot lines were pointless and most of the performances in the show were dreadful (including Patrick McGuiness). I love all of Peter Kay's work from his stand up to his television work. I think That Peter Kay Thing was a stroke of Genius and that he was superb at character acting. I had doubts when i found out about the spin off and they were confirmed by it. The only decent episode in my view was the fourth where they were in prison, and this was only because of the cameo from Brian Potter. I forgot just how much he holds the comedy in the show. The thing that you have to take into account is that it was written by Peter Kay and Patrick McGuiness who is not a comedian just his best friend, so why he thinks he can write comedy that is as well thought out as Peter Kay, Dave Spikey and Neil Fitzmaurice is beyond anyone. And furhter more i believe that the programme didn't work because it was of Max AND Paddy, i think Max is a clever character who has more to his back story but Paddy is just a string of crude jokes and innuendos. So i think the show didn't work because of Paddy but then the character of Max couldn't work without Paddy there as a contrast in personality. I don't know if anyone agrees or if you all just think i've looked too much into this but i just thought i'd have my say so that i wasn't just slagging of the programme without putting any real thought into it. Thanks for reading Cockers!

Exactly right! Phoenix nights had a wonderfull ensemble cast of fully rounded characters that the show could fall back on when Kay wasn't with McGuiness - here, they just filled each episode with a bunch of one-joke 'quirky' types - like the pointless Noddy Holder cameo where they gave him exaggerated false teeth in a desperate attempt at making the character funny - he wasn't.

I was embarrassed to see one of my fave comedy performers, the League of Gentlemen's Reece Shearsmith totally wasted here as the old school friend character whose one joke was to keep bringing up his vasectomy in conversation - terrible! It's a bit of a step down after Vic and Bob used him to great effect in their sitcom Catterick.

I totally agree about the comments on McGuiness - reckon Kay is blinkered by their long term friendship - he seems to appear in every piece of TV work Kay's ever done (except for Corrie)! Maybe Kay should try doing something without his best friend - might do him good!

One more thought: since Phoenix Nights, Dave Spikey has gone on to do the pretty rubbish Dead Man Weds, and Neil Fitzmaurice was in the god-awful Eyes Down. Is this the curse that is life after Phoenix Nights?

I must say I totally disagree with crazy_trebor. Patrick McGuinness' character is hilarious, he is a better actor than Peter Kay and his facial expressions are priceless. I found Max and Paddy's much funnier than Phoenix Nights and I found the character of Jerry in Phoenix Nights so unbelievably annoying I was glad that they were doing a series without him. Max and Paddy were always the best characters and Patrick is really funny and added something that Peter Kay missed out in Phoenix Nights. I think hes funnier than Kay and has a rawer quality to his humour rather than a churned out processed humour that kay has which sounds as if its been practiced to death. The only reason I watched Phoenix Nights in the first place was because I thought that Paddy was rather fit! I think Patrick has done himself proud and has broke away from "peter kays best friend" to become a comedian off his own back. Hes gorgeous and talented so he cant go wrong, really.

Oh right.... must've missed the 'Paddy McGuinness Show' - what exactly has he done of note without Kay then?

reply

Im not saying he has to do stuff without Kay, Im just saying that he can now be classed as a comedian and actor without people just referring to him as Peter Kays friend.

gemma375...disagree but agree

I thought McGuiness (paddy) was extremely funny and acted superbly, but he has a great role, guys can relate to him and girls fancy him, wel my girlfriend does. (i cant c it myself.. but that might be cuz im a guy..) n e way..i love max and paddy and this was the best comedic series on tv i have seen for some time, nearly as good as men behaving badly!!!

so i agree with the fact McGuiness is perfectly casted for paddy, however he isnt the funniest character!!! it has to be peter kay's max..he makes me laugh all of the time, from his laugh to his expressions to his wonderful sayings..iv watched every episode several times and even though i know what's going to happen i just cant help myself but laugh...i love peter kay's rendition of 'i guess thats why they call it the blues'!!! LOL so funny

I think the series is fantastic and absolutely cant wait for the next series if there is 1.......

what was every1's fave episode...? from 1-6..?

I have to agree with your girlfriend - he is totally fit! Any girl who doesnt agree has to be crazy! I have to say that while Paddy is my favourite, I can see where youre coming from by liking Max. From Phoenix Nights, he is in my top 3 after Paddy and Brian. I like all of them really, but if I had to pick a favourite it would have to be the one in Prison, when they had to use the showers, lol. I think they are doing a second series, it should be on TV in November and they are hoping to release the DVD of the 1st series this year too.
Whats your favourite?

"If you were to ask me on a Monday I'd say Yeees"
"Computer says noooo" (cough)

reply

well i already have series 1 on dvd...(naughty me) lol

Thanks for info...really cant wait for 2nd series..Roll on November!!! there goes my fridays...

im mutual abit like urself i dont really have a favourite episode because every episode is fantastic...but i have favourite moments that consist of several scenes from episode to episode....the shower scene was funny in the prison..

i just think the 1st episode when paddy..teaches max to dance is hilarious...when they do that dance in the club..its amazingly funny..

if you dont want 2 wait for the dvd series to come out...get on ebay there selling copies for £3...excellent copies!! with a cover and scene selection...

i see you have little britain quotations...straight answer Little britain ..or ..paddy+max whats better..?

reply

Thanks for that about ebay, I may have a look.... I agree with your favourite parts! :)
Little Britain or Max and Paddy?? Ooooooh, its difficult, theyre both funny, but I would have to say Max and Paddy's cos thanks to Patrick McGuinness they have the looks on their side - so whether its funny or not I know Ill like it, lol. So Ill say Max and Paddy's.

"If you were to ask me on a Monday I'd say Yeees"

reply

yeh i say max+paddy also... due to the fact that in little britain although most acts are hilariosly funny, u have acts that well..in my opinion...are boring and mundane but thats probably bcuz i have a different sense of humour...?

u looked on ebay yet..?

(i dont c wot d patrick mcguiness fing is all about, i fink he's pretty ugly..from a guys point of view..but then again my girlfriend likes him...so im starting to question my own appearance...!!!!!!)

Do you think McGuiness will eventually end up by himself or will continue collabertaing with Kay?...

reply

Little Britain can also get a bit repetitive as well, whereas Max and Paddy and Phoenix Nights have a storyline to it rather than different sketches.
I haven't looked on Ebay yet, cos I aint got any money, lol, but as soon as I get some more cash I'll have a look.
I can't believe you can't see what the Patrick McGuinness thing is about!! If I was a guy and I saw him, I would turn gay, I swear, lol. I think hes gorgeous :)
I reckon that he'll probably work with Kay a bit more because he's still just starting out really, but I reckon he will break away from the Peter Kays best friend label and do his own stuff. But either way, him and Kay make a great double act!
PS. You gf has good taste!
