Only a number of the members messed it up

Ok, so I've never been to prison, so I don't exactly know how it can affect people. To me it seems that it was just 2 of the guards who started going overboard with the 'power' that they had.

I would normally expect all of them keep in mind that this was an experiment and not act in full, and just spend the day and get paid.

Nobody messed it up.

The experiment was to see what people would do in these circumstances.

The whole thing escalated quicker than the Drs could have imagined.

The experiment was a total success in terms of human behaviour research.

Dr Z ended it as he had learnt everything he needed to know. He just learnt it quicker.

Yet, there were ten guards that stood around, watched the abuse, and said nothing. I was kind of more interested in the one guard, that the film makers kept showing, that obviously had a problem with the abuse and would often sit in background and look disgusted by the whole thing. I want to know why he never spoke up or tried to interfere. That would be the interesting part of the experiment.

I mean, the world always has bullies and there are always victims for them to harass. The thing that makes a society successful or a failure is how the good people, who see the bullies picking on the victim, react.

There are bystanders, but rarely innocent bystanders.
In junior high and HS, I was harassed and assaulted on a daily basis, both inside the school building and outside of it. Dozens of kids would follow me home to watch a group of boys (I am female, five feet tall, 110 pounds) assault me, with fists, throwing rocks, sticking their hands down my pants, as well as all of the verbal abuse. No one tried to intervene.
In the school, teachers, vice principal, counselor all turned away when it was happening. One classmate tried to help me.

I'm sorry to hear that

Amazing what people will do to each other. I am still alive and kicking and a productive member of society.. At least three of my perpetrators wound up in prison for various assault, rape charges as adults.
I just realized something ironic: the leader of that group of boys worked as a prison guard for a few years at North Dakota State Pen...until he attacked and nearly killed a prisoner and wound up on the other side of those bars. He used to beat the hell out of his girlfriend, but she would never press charges. At least he got put away before he killed her.
