The first or second night there. I have a pretty bad temper, especially when it comes to people pushing other people around like that. I felt angry just WATCHING the movie, no telling how I'd feel actually being in that situation.
> I have a pretty bad temper, especially when it comes to people pushing other people around like that.
Keep in mind the opening scenes where they interviewed potential participants. They asked questions to determine who might become violent. If you showed any signs of having a bad temper, you'd have been disqualified.
But, had I been there, I would have passively resisted at every turn. As a prisoner, I understand that the guards have the right to lock me in my cell and withhold privileges, but that's about it. I'd respond with minimal cooperation and refuse orders outside the boundaries of the experiment.
Yeah, I'd be in the hole most of the time. And, if I was struck or physically injured, I'd attack them at every opportunity and openly encourage the others to do so as well.

If I was a guard I would demand respect of the rules and as long as everyone followed the rules all would be peachy. I would do the count according to the rules and expect the prisoners to follow along without fuss.
I'm curious about your 'minimal cooperation', because if I gave an order I would expect it to be followed. -And I would not repeat myself. So what would your 'minimal cooperation' mean in that situation?
> If I was a guard I would demand respect of the rules and as long as everyone followed the rules all would be peachy. I would do the count according to the rules and expect the prisoners to follow along without fuss.
And that was the apparent intent of the experiment. We even heard the guy say that he expected this to be a long, boring two weeks. But, we all know that some people let a little bit of power go to their head. And we also know that most people meekly follow the leader. So, it was inevitable that one guard would go crazy with power and that all the other guards would just let him.
This is how most police forces work. There's only a few really bad guys but lots of others who just let them get away with their abusive of power.
And that's how Hitler came to power and that's why Trump is going to win.
Most good people won't stand up to evil and, instead, just turn a blind eye.

You didn't really answer my question. I asked what your 'minimal cooperation' would mean in this situation? (notice this, if this was in the experiment prison i would NOT repeat myself as I did just now)
As an example: To make you learn your numbers I might have you do the numbers exercise and ask you to repeat them over and over until I felt you knew them. From your current perspective I am sure you can understand why this would be a sensible thing to do (as the experiment was about stripping away the individuality of the inmates), but how would your 'minimal cooperation' react to this situation?
-5700, would you force me to react to your uncooperative behavior?
> I asked what your 'minimal cooperation' would mean in this situation?
I thought I mentioned that in my first response. I'd basically do anything that would be normally expected of a prisoner, but I'd refuse to do stuff outside the scope of the experiment. So, if told to go to my cell, I'd do it. But, if I was told to do push ups or sing songs, I wouldn't. My "sentence" is to be imprisoned. That's all.
And, if any guard struck me or injured me or starved me, I would announce that I was done with the experiment (as physical violence is not allowed) and begin calling for a real lawyer.
> From your current perspective I am sure you can understand why this would be a sensible thing to do (as the experiment was about stripping away the individuality of the inmates), but how would your 'minimal cooperation' react to this situation?
Good question. I would repeat my number until I felt I knew it. Then, I'd stop. I draw the line when things turn from reasonable requests into torture.

But what if physical exercise was part of the regulations? The jail is responsible for the health if the inmates after all, and regular exercise is important. So what if I lined you up and told all of you to drop and do twenty pushups? Remember that the inmates do not know the regulations that the guards follow.
I can't recall if anyone was starved in the movie. If you were pissed off about the pushups, later when it was time to eat you might refuse as a protest. But that would not work as I would only tell you once and then if you did not go to your seat at the table I would lock the door. It would be your choice to eat or not.
But how can I be sure that you know the numbers? I must treat you all the same, so if one of the inmates keeps *beep* up all of you need to repeat the numbers until all of you know them. It is about stripping you of your individuality, so the whole point is that you all do it.
As a side note, do you have any personal experience from the military or similar? I can tell you that I have done my military service (as a non-voluntary conscript). So I have seen real authority first hand. And I have dropped down and done the pushups in real life. People who have done their military service all agree that they entered it as boys and finished it as men (or girls/women in the case of female volunteers). My number was 8107.
So 5700, do you consider it torture to memorize four digits?
> The jail is responsible for the health if the inmates after all, and regular exercise is important.
But there is a line between exercise for health reasons and exercise for torture.
> I can't recall if anyone was starved in the movie.
Well, starved is a relative term since the experiment only lasted six days.
> But how can I be sure that you know the numbers? I must treat you all the same, so if one of the inmates keeps *beep* up all of you need to repeat the numbers until all of you know them.
You are seeming very eager to justify the bad behavior of the guards. Yes, you might hide your torture as exercise or singing or number reciting, but it is still just sadistic torture for your own pleasure.
> I can tell you that I have done my military service (as a non-voluntary conscript). So I have seen real authority first hand. And I have dropped down and done the pushups in real life.
But, they are doing it for the good of the unit. Discipline is important if your life is going to be in the hands of your squad mates. In prison, that is not a concern. Prisoners are being punished by removing them from society. Anything more than that is torture for no reason.
> So 5700, do you consider it torture to memorize four digits?
No. And I can memorize my number in about fifteen seconds. Can I go back to my cell now? What do you mean that you want me to repeat my number 1200 times?!?

You mean the world would have been peachy if we just let the Spanish inquisition do as they please, and if we never revolted our way from dictatorial monarchies towards democracy?

Keep the perspective here please. In this situation we are in an experiment where I have been designated as the guard and you as the prisoner. You are also getting payed to take part in this experiment. Would you start a revolt?
Besides, if you are a christian and have read the bible you should know that all earthly authority is by Gods will and thus any revolt or protest against them are the same as a revolt against Gods will. So if you are a proper christian you should kneel before the Spanish inquisition.
I guess no one read about how kids wanted to leave and end the "experiment" and we're not sllowed! this would never happen in todays world, people wold get killed for over stepping bounds.. even in prison gaurds respect inmates, bc in the real world you can and will get hurt! the leader in thi whole thing the "teacher" was a sick individual claiming he got intrapped in his role as the head of the "prison" he wouldve been the firsg to get his a$$ handed to him once I got out.. these kds were essentially tortjred and didnt have the balls to stand up and let the sick gaurds know what the real world is like..
