This is who actually funded the experiment

Many might assume the experiment was funded by the college but in reality the experiment was funded by the U.S. Office of Naval Research and was of interest to both the U.S. Navy and Marine Corps as an investigation into the causes of conflict between military guards and prisoners.

Interesting to see how much use they actually got from the results when you take into account all the controversy that happened surrounding military prisons especially during the Abu Ghraib incident. Ironically Doctor Zimbardo became involved with the defense team of lawyers representing one of the Abu Ghraib prison guards, Staff Sergeant Ivan "Chip" Frederick. He was granted full access to all investigation and background reports, and testified as an expert witness in SSG Frederick's court martial, which resulted in an eight-year prison sentence for Frederick in October 2004.
