oedipus complex?
Does anyone else think that John's obsession with his mother is a little more creepy than it should be?

shareUh..no. I think he's acting the same way you and I would act if your gym teacher from hell was to marry your mother and become your stepdad, although you're a grown man, that would still bother you somehow, it just happens that it bothers him a little bit more than usual b/c he's a reminder of all the insecurities and bad memories he has as a child.
shareNo, I wouldn't call it creepy. John had a close relatioship with his mother because his father died when he was young and he was her only child. He felt that he had to stop what he percieved as she was making a huge mistake by being involved with Woodcock. Most guys in his situation would do the same thing, maybe not going to the lengths that John did, but they wouldn't remain silent either. If you want to see a creepy parent/child relationship portrayal, I would recommend the film PUNCH. There was definite incestual subtext in that film.
shareSusan Sarandon is a MILF!!!!
shareWhile not directly Oedipal, I think it certainly gave a vague nod towards Hamlet. All the key plot points are there if not necessarily performed by the right characters.
Young philosopher arrives home after his father is deceased to find a brutal, arrogant thug in his mother's bed and about to become his new 'father'.
Farley slowly goes nuts and while not exactly procrastinating, he employs hapless friends to set traps and spy on Woodcock for proof of his crimes against his mother (a Pageant Queen no less).
Matters come to a head and the mother stands up for her son and briefly rejects the husband while Farley and Woodcock play the 'I know that you know that I know' game with each other. Farley exiles himself, but quickly returns to confront Woodcock. They wrestle (fence), before both coming to terms with their own faults.
Certainly not a direct parallel by any means, but its definitely got all elements of the tragedy.
Yeah, I do. His hugs and kisses were lingering and not the normal 20-something type of thing, in my opinion. Plus, I think that Scott just looked creepy in this movie.
