The Poseidon Adventure (1972) Decent diseaster flick, with an all star cast.
Beyond the Poseidon Adventure (1979) Ok, this one is just dumb. I don't care even if Michael Caine was in it. (He was in Jaws: The Revenge too. What was he thinking?)
The Poseidon Adventure (2005) Remake over at the big WB studios. Ok, I hate remakes. I just hate them. But it might still be ok to watch.
The Poseidon Adventure (TV, 2005) Man what is up with the Hallmark channel. Why can't cabel channels just STOP making movies. They are CRAP. C-R-A-P. Crap. This is going to be lame
What i dont get is 2 poseidon adventure films so close together even if one is going to be on televison and the other on the big screen. The big screen film will probably be better than the tv version but they need to get almost and exact mix of great characters that the 1972 film had or it's just going to be a special f/x film only.
Is everyone sure they are doing both a Big screen movie and a Miniseries? Maybe they decided against the Big Screen version and decided to do a TV version.
There are definetly two remakes of Poseidon. The TV miniseries has finished filming with no air date yet. The big screen version is still being written.
Wasnt Sally Field in the 2nd one.."Beyond the Poseidon Adventure"? I think she may have been, why the heck are they making another one...2 was good enough..2nd movies are always a set back..they make u want to kill the producers..lol..not literally..but c'mon..doesnt it get old??
I don't know why they would make a film like this for TV. The director seems to be just asking for a crap film on his resume (or whatever film people call it). A TV film CANNOT have the budget for the special effects required to pull off a capsizing ship!?!
If the rapid-fire succession of Titanic the TV miniseries and Titanic the sick DiCaprio joke are anything to go by, the Poseidon Adventure (TV) will be garbage. The Titanic mini-series had rubbishy CG effects and terrible sets. It looked like a film-student's effort next to the big budget realism of Cameron's film (corny teen-fest is the latter though). Likewise, observe 1979's S.O.S Titanic (TV) - that was unconvincing too: the filmmakers used the Queen Mary (which looks nothing like the Titanic), and to simulate the ship's final plunge, they just titled the camera. Not to mention the water ran THE WRONG WAY down the deck (should gurgle up the deck).
So if these filmsd are anything to go by, the TV Poseidon Adventure should be a cheesy load of rubbish.
"Ok, the 4th Poseidon Flick. Why?" I had a similar reaction, though it was more like "You gotta be *beep* kidding me!" But that was until I read the fine print. This is based on some dude's novel and not on the 1972 Gene Hackman flick. Though I'm still not interested.
They say you never know. Not True. Sometimes you know.
tropical_flakes i have news for you but the original 1972 Gene Hackman film was based on THE SAME NOVEL! Paul Gallico wrote "The Poseidon Adventure" in 1969. It was filmed in 1972 with Gene Hackman, etc. Paul Gallico then wrote a sequel "Beyond the Poseidon Adventure" it was published in 1978 after his death and was filmed in 1979 starring Michael Caine, etc. ALL the Poseidon movies are based on the original novel by Paul Gallico.
Oh, then this movie's existence is as dumb as I thought before. Pardon my own dumbness, but was what turned over the ship in the book a tidal wave like in the original movie, or a terrorist act like supposedly in this new rendition?
They say you never know. Not True. Sometimes you know.
In the book, the ship was turned over by a tsunami which was caused as a result of an undersea earthquake. funny, i have read the book and seen the movie and i have to say, the movie stays very similar to the book. The only key difference is that in the movie, there is no spinster in love with the reverend and the brother and sister are travelling together in the movie, whereas in the novel they travel with their parents and a different ending is the result, alhtough pretty much the same as the movie. You are all picking out the negative things about it being remade four times but i have to admit there will be one good thing about it being made again as a movie- better special effects.
There was slightly more than that that was changed between the novel and the original book. They changed some of the characters a little bit. For instance, in the book the young boy was very much into space travel stuff, wanted to grow up to be an astronaut. And he knew that a particlar satellite would locate them once it was known the ship had failed to reach its destination. In the movie, they changed him into a boy who loved ships and new everything about them, and particularly about the type of ship they were on, and how to get out. They also changed his fate from the book to the movie.
Well, it's interesting. 'The New Poseidon Adventure' (the TV miniseries) has an obviously low budget but still manages to produce (very) convincing sets and the special effects were decent enough (for those audiences that don't expect 'The Day After Tomororow' treatment with EVERY SINGLE FILM - by the way, TDAT was overdone anyway).
It wasn't really garbage and actually looked quite good for a b-grade film. It's a real testament to Hallmark. Fortunately, none of the scenes were filmed on the 'Queen Mary'.
See if for yourself (like I've done) before jumping to conclusions.
The same thing happened with Titanic. Right before the James Cameron version came out, CBS presented a mini-serieswith George C. Scoot as Cpt Smith and Mrs. Michael Douglass as some made up character called Mrs. Paradign or something.
You Forgot DeeP Water (1999) Which Added Guns and terrorist And the Ship From the Love Boat as the MV. Intrepid By the same director. ( I found this film Interesting)
The score Music That is Playng while the ship departs Reminds me Of the Theme From Raise the titanic It even has a Building Fanfare And then Fades into Romantic String section Like the Latter films theme Claire Marlo Did an exelent job with the scoring of this B movie I forgot to mention Alexander baker.
And the sets werent as grand as in the posiedon adventure But they were good as in they show you what a More Modern Economy Cruise ships Corridors Look Like.
And silenced Pistols Sounded as loud as Regular guns I assume they were Barrel extenders
(I liked this Movie Even though Most people dont Because it has some flaws but not nearly as many as Titanic which had 192
This is actually the fifth poseidon film. there was a silent version in 1911. I didn't believe it either until I found it on here. Not much information on it other than the date and the basic plot outline. Same plot. Some of the same characters.
Sorry, I'm a moron. There is no 1911 version. It was a faked IMDB page sent to me. I was pretty fascinated by it, but then my brain kicked in and i did better research. Thank you Snopes.com
Because it's easier to remake a film than to take a chance on something new and different. And, because the American public keeps lining up to see these awful remakes!!
Let's start a campaign to boycott this an all remakes and maybe, MAYBE, Hollywood will listen. Until an actualy boycott happens, remakes and rehashes and old TV shows remade for movies will continue to be the main product of Follywood...excuse me, Hollywood.
This one seems to sound like the worst so far- and I can't say I was blown away by the first, either. It's attempts at relevance today are laughable, even ridiculous. Four a--holes with handguns taking over a rather large cruise ship with 3,700 passengers- not even counting crew- to place bombs and the like onboard is ridiculous. Come on, especially in that scene in the trailer with the crowd- a group of people could have easily lunged at him and knocked the gun away and beat the pulp out of him- but nope, too intelligent. Even more absurd is that a bomb could be powerful enough to capsize a ship without leaving it in pieces. If the bomb were merely blew a hole in the ship, it's unlikely she'd do much else than simply sink. Even a 90 degree list is exceptional, and that's only halfway to capsized. Clearly the most likely way a ship like that could be capsized (other than a huge rogue wave) is by emptying the ballast tanks rapidly and opening the sea chests. Even a botched bombing intended to sink the ship quickly wouldn't be at all likely accomplish this. And the cliche 'S/S' prefix only adds to the fact that they have no idea what they're talking about. The ship is state of the art and is steam powered? I don't think so. And for what it's worth- 136,000 gross tons is amazing, but not record breaking in this day and age- if that's what they were going for- like the original. To think, even watching it maybe 10 or 11 years ago, I thought ships wouldn't approach 150,000 gross tons. Sorry for my nerdy rant, but if they made so many mindless mistakes, both technical or just common sense, and judging from the trailer and the fact that this is soo overdone- this can't possibly be worth anyone's time. That goes for the screenwriter as well, I sort of feel sorry that this will be his first mini-series. All well, maybe better look next time. Always look on the bright side of life, eh? Now I actually feeling like watching this miniseries for laughes...maybe even for all around entertainment! My God...Monty Python songs put you in a forgiving mood- well, at least one of them does...come to think of it.
I still think the Title wave Striking the side of a Ship and Rolling it over Or Dim Ass Wipe Terrorist; Half Wits Planting Bombs on a Ship
Sorry but the Wave Scares me more.
Did you get a Good look at this Moron Ass Wipe they Caught in the UK he looks like a Guy the Computer/Chess Nerds picked on. If this is the Face of who we are fighting this war will be over by the next remake Poseidon Adventure.
I was very disturbed to find out they were using a terrorist attack to flip the boat. Isn't there enough terrorism for real. Why incorporate that non-sense into the movie. I like the title wave thought myself. The waves coming and there's not a damn thing you can do about. Terrorists, well, ... you can try and shoot them or what ever. The remake movie didn't say anything about terrorist thats going to the theater so i will go see that.
Beyond the Poseidon Adventure (1979) Ok, this one is just dumb. I don't care even if Michael Caine was in it. (He was in Jaws: The Revenge too. What was he thinking?)
Not only that, but he didn't think of taking time off from that film to get his first oscar. Oh well. reply share
Actually there's five Poseidon Adventures, the seventies film that everyone knows so well was itself a remake of an old D.W. Griffith silent film from the early days of hollywood, then of course there's the sequel to the seventies flick, the upcoming big budget hollywood blockbuster that's due next year, and this, which is being advertised in Australia as The New Poseidon Adventure (it airs in some parts of the country this Sunday night).
... but the D.W. Griffith version of The Poseidon Adventure doesn't exist. It was a joke made up by silly people. The book itself was written in 1969. Look up the author Paul Gallico.
I've just seen a trailer of this 'movie' in the spanish channel Antena 3. It will air next Wednesday and I must say that it looks horrible. The FX are worse than in The Sound Of Thunder so you can imagine...
