Rutger Hauer, Adam Baldwin and Bryan Brown MADE the movie worth watching
I have to admit that I was disappointed to see that they substituted the plausible tidal wave plot with the one more terrorist storyline. The first was definitely superior in every way but the cast.
This version had Rutgar Hauer doing his usual fine work portraying the priest as a sensitive, likeable character than the fanatical ranting and raving reverend in the 70's version. But, then again; I've never seen Hauer give a bad performance in anything he's involved with.
Bryan Brown also gave a believable performance as his character.
I missed the crude and arrogant Det. Rogo in the first movie. His character added so much to the storyline. However, I felt that this version of Rogo, in the capacity of Homeland Security was well acted and cast.
All in all; if I were seeing this version, and had never seen the first movie; I would have rated it an 8 out of 10 on it's own merit.
About 6 of those 8 points were earned by Rutgar Hauer's acting skills. It was nice to see him cast as a sympathetic character for a change. He should seek more roles like this one, as he's been type-cast as a sinister character in most of his movies. I had him figured for the terrorist role for sure before I saw the movie! LOL.
My opinion; for what it's worth.........
