This movie is supposed to be based on the novel, not the 1972 movie like it said in the Trivia section. Well, that's a bunch of crap!
Scenes were clearly taken out of the 1972 movie. The kitchen fire, the vertical air vent. What about the part where the lights go out in the novel and the braty kid disappears and dies? Why, could they put that in?
Only small characters from the novel were the ONLY things from the novel.
Man, the 4-hour version, if it comes out, I hope it's better than this crap!

I noticed that too. It was more based on the 1972 movie than it was the novel.
Shelby in the book was the family's last name, but here it became the daughter's name. In 1972 it was the older daughter and the boy's last names, Susan and Robin Shelby, which were their names in the book.
In the novel, Belle Rosen dies just before they are rescued. Here she dies just as Shelly Winters did, right after the swim.
All the characters from '72 were in the book, but here names were changed and crucial characters such as Manny Rosen, Nonnie Perry and Linda Rogo are completely removed.
Where was the Beamer, Kemal and Miss Kinsale?
Characters died in the remake in the same spots they did in the original; fell from the smokestack, after the swim and two fall off the catwalk (in the original, Stella Stevens and Gene Hackman, okay, so he jumpbed).
None of them died at these times in the book, because as you noted, there was no smokestack in the book.
The book had no terrorist and I for one would have enjoyed seeing that kid disappear too.
I forgot to mention when Aimee took of her dress and runs around the ship in her underwear with only a jacket covering her. Boy, did that sound like Linda Rogo, even though that was in the novel.
The character of Kemal was changed from an oiler to a bald mantainence man with Arce who dies by being sucked underwater.
