Loss of a hero

Spoilers

I was so upset about the way the character of Belle Rosen was handled. Making her a widow was a poor choice, but what upset me the most was how her brave underwater swim was just kinda' tossed aside by having the bishop swim with her. In 1972, she saves Rev. Scott, in the book she is even more heroic, swimming through the underwater channel three times by herself. Then Belle's death is made so meaningless and hokey, that instead of balling like a little baby, I just thought, "Another one bites the dust". A very sad remake, indeed.

Belle Rosen: You see, that's the sign for life. And life always matters very much.

Having the bishop swim with her might have detracted from her own heroics, but was logical for his character. He would certainly not have let her swim alone while he stayed behind. Even if she didn't need him, his conscience would not let him remain behind.

One thing I did like about this remake was Rutger Hauer. He did a good job and was one of the more likeable characters.

I agree. Having Rutger Hauer in this remake helped get me through it.
