That's exactly why you don't know, because you haven't seen the original. However, I loved the new one because it paid such big homage to the original, and also followed the book better, and in some ways was better. The DVD version was much better than the television cut, and the effects are much more clear. I just love seeing returning characters and scenes that were from the original film. I was having fun pointing out all the scenes and saying "Hey, that was in the old one!". I would suggest renting the old one and seeing what you think after that. What they did for the little money they had, only $14,000,000, is amazing.

I haven't seen the original movie either, but I thought this one deserved a better rating than that. As far as action movies go it was good, especially since it was a made for TV thing. Sure the digital effects could have been better, but then the budget thing comes into play again. I also saw the new movie Poseidon and as far as I'm concerned I found this version more entertaining.

If you had seen the original, I am sure you would understand everyone's resentment of this remake. I've seen the original dozens of times, but I wasn't so disturbed by this remake that I couldn't sit through it. It was OK...I don't think it was as awful as a lot of posters here are making it out to be.
