How does a bomb capsize a ship?

Seriously, wouldn't it just blow out the hull instead of flipping it over intact?

Gentlemen, you can't fight in here! This is the War Room!

Actually, when the survivors start their climb up from the dining room, that's part of their plan. They figure that there's now a good-sized hole right above the water line.

The main problem, once they get there is that they find there's a huge amount of heavy debris, block the way out. That's why they're forced to cross to the opposite side of the hull and use the unexploded bomb to make a new exit path.

The main question I had in watching this was, when the first bomb went off, wouldn't the engine room crew immediately shut all the watertight doors, thus sealing off the affected area and limiting the flooding to only one compartment?

I honestly don't think a ship would capsize from a hole being blown into it like that. It could eventually sink, but not totally capsize. The Andrea Doria had a massive hole torn into her side after colliding with the Stockholm in 1956. She immediately took a severe list to one side. However, the ship itself stayed afloat for eleven hours -enough for all people not killed in the actual collision to be safely evacuated. A ship like the Poseidon -a modern vessel with multiple safety features- would certainly be designed to be able to stand the hull being opened up like that. Even if the bridge crew were all dead, the engine room crew had their own controls and would be able to immediately seal off the damaged area and start the pumps. The ship would have been able to limp its way to the closest port, or -at the very least- stay afloat until help came.

And don't forget the cruise ship that sinks of the coast of a Greek island. And has also capsized. And stay afloat for more than 12 hours or so

The Poseidon capsizes because the bomb explodes only on one side, which throws off the ships center of gravity. Causing the ship to flip over.Man you are so dumb.

The Poseidon in this one seemed to flip over very slowly then. If your point is the case, then the ship would have flipped much quicker than it did.

OK explain why the ship's centre of gravity is "thrown off" and why that causes the ship to capsize. Are you saying the ship wouldn't have capsized if there were holes in both sides? Maybe you can explain why the ship would or wouldn't capsize if there were holes in both sides of the ship.

I cannot see how a hole being blown in one side of the ship would cause it to just capsize like that in such a relatively short period of time. It would take on a list, but not capsize.

As well, the engine room crew would have been able to seal off the damage and start the pumps fairly quickly, even without any orders from the bridge.
