Junebug (2005)
I wasn't expecting greatness from Junebug, and perhaps that's why it surprised me greatly. I expected a simple dramedy, but there's so much greatness here indeed. There's so much ambiguity with each of the characters, so much that is hinted on from unspoken silences and quick facial expressions and cues, and yet nothing is ever fully revealed. The film remains as much of a mystery in the end than in the beginning, and this is honestly the biggest compliment I can give it because it all works so well. The script and direction are incredibly focused and there's no hint of leaving things unresolved because it's easier. There's so much one can talk about and yet at the same time, so little for actual review. I will say that the entire cast is fantastic, absolutely perfection and all of the actors understand the tone the director is going for. Amy Adams though remains the stand out, and although I have never been totally impressed with her, she was the single reason I sought this out and both she and the film have turned out to completely exceed my expectations. She gives out what is one of the best female supporting turns in the last decade, and I mean that.
Overall, I'm still not exactly sure what I just watched, but it sure was completely engrossing in the best sense of the word. Really disappointed this didn't get more notice as a film as a whole.
