how old are ashley and johnny supposed to be?

i don't get it.they don't look in their eraly 20's , more in the late 20's

reply

haha, true... i guess we're supposed to take a leap of faith with that, if they were supposed to be in their early 20s.

Alternately, it's not unheard of for ppl in their late 20s to move back in with parents these days.

Actors are not chosen because they are the exact age of the characters that they are playing. There are more important considerations although the actors need to be plausible as to age. What we are shown in the movie implies that Ashley and Johnny are 3 to 4 years out of high school, and nothing contradicts that. George is about four years older than Johnny. To me, they are all quite plausibly as old as the movie tells us they are. When I was watching the film, I had no problem with their ages, but I don't find that picking at details increases my enjoyment or understanding of a film._______________For easy markup see http://userscripts.org/scripts/show/42255

Agree with pplikk 200%. We spend so much time trying to determine how old a person/character is that, when watching a film, we can possibly miss important parts of the story because we're focusing on something else. Can't help but wonder if the focus on age is primarily an "American thing" or is it prevalent throughout the world? Only been outside the US a couple of times, and briefly at that. Maybe it's universal???

I felt that they were still high school age.
1. Johnny tells Madeline that Ashley kept "looking at him all semester" and that implied that he could not resist her. Johnny also says he wanted to do 12th grade in DC. But because of the pregnancy he had to stay there and do 12th grade in his hometown and be with her.

she got pregnant before he could leave for the 12th grade.

Remember he was taking an English course and having to do a paper on it.

Ashley mentions that Madelaine might be too old for babies. Yet she looks in her 30s. Implying that ashley herself is very young and so is George. Therefore just letting my brain wander, if Johnny is 18 or 19 and still in 12th grade, then George could be 6-10 years older and Madeline 35, or so.

Mad would be older than George by 5-7 years but not too old to get pg like Ashley thought. Ashley thinking Mad is old, made me realize that Ashley herself is still a teenager.

Johnny: Except for her. She kept looking at me all junior year. And I couldn't concentrate. That *beep* me up.
Johnny is explaining to Madeleine how he came to drop out of school and get married. At this point, he is blaming Ashley. There is no suggestion here that Ashley became pregnant, and that Johnny married her because of it.
Johnny also says he wanted to do 12th grade in DC. But because of the pregnancy he had to stay there and do 12th grade in his hometown and be with her.
Johnny: I would have gone to Washington D.C. in 12th Grade.
He means he would have gone to Washington on a senior school trip, not that he would've gone to school there. The trip was one of the things that he missed by dropping out of school to get married.
she got pregnant before he could leave for the 12th grade.
Ashley: I don't know if he wants a baby right now. But I know just as soon as he sees it he's going to fall in love. He's just going through a phase. I read in one of my books that that can happen. Madeleine: How long has he been like that? Ashley: Two years.
So, they have been married for at least two years.
Peg: You haven't seen your brother in 3 years!
and probably more than three years. There is no suggestion this is the first time that that George has seen them since they got married.
Remember he was taking an English course and having to do a paper on it.
Ashley: It's for his GED. He didn't graduate high school. We just loved each other too much to wait.
Johnny is not taking a course; he is trying to complete the requirements for high school diploma equivalency certificate. He has finally realized that if he is ever going to get a better job, he will have to have a high school diploma.
Ashley mentions that Madelaine might be too old for babies. Yet she looks in her 30s.
Madeleine looks at least 35, and quite possibly 40, to me, and as far as having babies goes, the difference is critical. It is not that Ashley thinks that Madeleine looks menopausal, but that having a first baby over 40 is problematical. Ashley has been reading a lot about having babies. For easy markup in Firefox & Opera, see http://userscripts.org/scripts/show/42255

They are both in their 20s I'm assuming. I watched the movie last night and was wondering the same thing, but at some point (I can't recall who said it or exactly when), but someone said something about "back when we were in high school" or something to that effect. Based on that, we know they are past high school age, and they look like they're in their 20s, so that's what made sense to me.

Who the hell are Amy and Ben, and who thought you were talking about them?

To me, they are quite plausibly in their early 20s which is what the characters are. Guessing age is very difficult.

But really, who the hell cares. You're not going to increase your enjoyment of the movie by picking at details. Even if you think that they look older, surely there is nothing jarring about their age.

Having to cast actors who are the same age of the characters that they are going to play is an impossible constraint.

I don t know how I got into this, I just asked how old they, the charachters were supposed to be and not how old they look or whatewere! I just didn't understand cause they were highschool dropout right?or older?when I say they seem older I mean referred to his brother age which i supposed is not that distant to johnny's age.How could they be in their eraly 20's? I think they are 23 ,for what I could get.sorry!didn t mean to offend.

You wrote above:
Title: how old are ashley and johnny supposed to be?

You said how old they look to you, in their late 20s, as if you did not think that they were plausible for their early 20s. If you were actually asking a question, it would've been a good idea to put the question in your message, not just in the title, because what was in your message does not sound like a question. It sounds like you are answering your own question.
when I say they seem older I mean referred to his brother age which i supposed is not that distant to johnny's age
Where do you mention George at all? I would guess that George is about four years older than Johnny..
How could they be in their eraly 20's? I think they are 23
23 is early 20s. I think they are about 22.

What is exasperating is that you cannot tell the age of a character by how old you think the character looks. It just doesn't work that way. You seem to have been asking how old Ashley and Johnny because, to you, they look older than the movie is implying that they are. It does not matter how old they look, and I don't agree with you about how old they look.

And once again, who the hell are Amy and Ben, and who thought you were talking about them?

reply

amy=amy adams
ben:ben mackenzie

actorz, they play the two kids above.

so they're 22 and so it's george lile only 26?
not knowing the age those charachters were supposed to have changed a lot of things to me.I honestly didn t even know george and his wife had a huge gap,i tought theywere the same age.
johnny being 20 or 23 makes a whole difference to me,cause this would mean they've been married 5 years and not 2.

and this makes me think he is tired of marriage as itself and not cause he rushed on it

Then what did you mean by this:

It doesn't make any sense. Older than what, the actors? Or the actors seem older than the characters?.
so they're 22 and so it's george lile only 26?
That is my guess, but they can both be off.
I honestly didn t even know george and his wife had a huge gap,i tought theywere the same age.
Then you are really awful at guessing someone's age. If you just looked George without any context, it would be hard to guess his age, but side-by-side with Madeleine, she looks a lot older. At least 10 years, maybe more.
johnny being 20 or 23 makes a whole difference to me,cause this would mean they've been married 5 years and not 2.
Ashley says the Johnny has been going through a "phase" for two years, so they certainly been married longer than that. George hasn't been home in three years and there is no suggestion that this is the first time he has seen them since they got married. I would guess that they have been married for about four years.
and this makes me think he is tired of marriage as itself and not cause he rushed on it
He is certainly tired of living at home, with his mother. Who wouldn't be. But he is very happy at work. It certainly feels that he has never done anything, not even a trip to Washington DC, and now that he's going to have the additional responsibility of a baby, it probably never will. He can not afford of a home of his own, he doesn't really have any prospects, and he feels trapped.

Part of him probably wishes that he were not married, but I don't believe that is the same as being "tired of marriage."

I guess I am. if Madeleine is 40, and george is 30 than peg must be in her late 40 (Im guessing she had george very young...like at 19-20) so there are jus 8 years between them(them as peg and madeleine)?

claudja777 wrote:

I think that George is about 26. I think the gap between him and Johnny is about four years. I think Madeleine is 35 to 40. The father seems to be retired, at least as far as I can remember, and Peg is a few years younger, say mid 50s. People age at very different rates, and age is always difficult to guess, but it becomes harder the older the people are.

I think that is what makes the most sense, always paying more attention to what we are told about the characters than to how they look. There is obviously some uncertainty.

I tought peg had the guys very young, à la south-style.

What is there in the movie that leads you to think that? Ashley and Johnny are quite plausibly early 20s, and that is clearly implied. There is no way that Peg is in her 40s. If the movie implied that she is, I would believe that, but I don't think that it does.

Are you basing that on your conception that Southern women always have children when they're young? That is a ridiculous misconception.

I was actually.

Okay. It does not prove anything, but the actor who played Eugene was born in 1942 and the actress who played Peg was born in 1951.

I know I had seen him before in movies dated 1969 .It doesn't proove anything tough.
it was all in my mind, that s what I tought.
george:30

johnny:25?20?(in dialogues they were supposed to be near so I went for 25)
Ashleey:25 as well,they were classmate

I have no idea whether you are saying that is what you originally thought or that is what you still think. If it is what you originally thought, and you have changed your mind, I have no idea why you posted it.

In any event I am really tired of this "discussion."

A major point in the film is the large age difference between George and Madeleine. Did you miss that?

You think Ashley and Johnny have been married for seven years? Then just go ahead and think that.

There is no way that either Eugene or Peg are under 50. But I suppose there is no accounting for someone's judgment of age.

whatever.you are too precise and too obsessed with being right or correcting things.that s so annoying.

I am delighted. In that case we are even. Even your first message was annoying as you can probably tell by my reply.

I gather you did not understand that the very large age difference between George and Madeleine was a major point.

who cares if I didn t understand.Really I don t care I am not perfect nor try to be.I d rather be flawed. And as The Great Robert Altman said "I never try to deny things. If I'll do it,I'll be fake as them"
