Was Wark really retarded?

Ashley called him that, but I don't recall his being referred to as that earlier in the movie. If he wasn't retarded, what was his problem? What was wrong with him?

I want the doctor to take your picture so I can look at you from inside as well.

I believe autism was mentioned in the first scene of the film, in the gallery. I don't think they were referring to Wark in that scene, but it seems to me a partial explanation of Wark's oddness, the way he interacts with strangers, and his very peculiar artistic vision.
