People tend to ignore links when they aren't clickable. And that's a good find. I didn't spot it myself and I've already watched the episode 3 times.

I don't see the connection.

It's the Monarch's parents in the boat and also at the venture compound.

No, I get that's what the OP is saying. The lady, sure, especially with that cigarette holder and the hair, but the guy doesn't look the same.

and isn't that Rusty and the monarch playing together in the foreground?

reply

Yes, that part was addressed directly in the show.

I'm sorry, I will have to go back and rewatch the episode, I seem to have misremembered it.

I've been re-watching all of the episodes in preparation for Season 6 (which I really hope will begin airing in January 2015) and I'm beginning to agree with the theory that Dr. Venture and The Monarch are half-brothers. In Season Three's episode "Dr. Quymn, Medicine Woman", the flashbacks revealed that Jonas Venture, Sr. was a swinger. The first conclusion I drew from this was that Dr. Venture and Dr. Quymn were actually half-brother and sister since we see Jonas Venture, Sr. and Mrs. Quymn together. She was married to Colonel Gentleman, who's gay, so it's doubtful that the two of them had much of a sexual relationship. (Colonel Gentleman chooses a younger man at the party while Mrs. Quymn and Jonas, Sr. are together.) The photos that show that The Monarch's parents and Jonas, Sr. were obviously friends leads one to wonder if they were also participators in the "key parties" and The Monarch was a result!

She's Gentlemen's step-daughter. She is from a previous relationship. Now even though Gentlemen is clearly homosexual, it appears that he (at least in the past) did maintain a long term relationship with a woman (even while swinging and whatnot). I don't think it would be as improbable for him to father a child just because he is gay... but nothing seems to suggest that he did.

My guess is that in his younger days Colonel Gentlemen probably did a lot of switch hitting.

Doc Hammer mentions in the commentary that Col. Gentleman is a pansexual fan of any pretty thing. He is not hung up on gender in his appetites.

Apparently I somehow missed the mention of Tara Quymn being Colonel Gentleman's stepdaughter. I need to re-watch the DVDs with the commentary and whatnot; I don't remember Doc Hammer stating in the commentary that Col. Gentleman was pan-sexual, either... that's one of the major drawbacks to having such a long wait between seasons!

I still think it's possible that Rusty and Tara are half-siblings due to the relationship between Jonas, Sr. and Mrs. Quymn (not to mention the physical similarities between Rusty and Tara), but that may just be another of the "red herring"-type deals that the creators like to throw out there for everyone to speculate on! The Venture Bros. Wikia site for the episode, http://venturebrothers.wikia.com/wiki/Dr._Quymn%2C_Medicine_Woman, notes that "The episode strongly implies that Dr. Quymn is Dr. Jonas Venture's daughter and therefore Rusty's half-sister."

The Wikia page also pointed out something I'd totally missed: the young man Colonel Gentleman sees at the key party and declares "Oh, you pretty thing!"(a reference to the Bowie song "Oh! You Pretty Things") was David Bowie. Among the other guests were Bobby Seale (Member of the Black Panthers), Twiggy (60's Super Model), Sammy Davis Jr., and Van Williams (dressed in his Green Hornet outfit).

This series definitely requires multiple viewings... you can miss so much just glancing away for a few seconds! Being a major Bowie fan, I was obviously not paying attention to miss that!
