Why the constant throat-clearing from Scar-Jo?

There was one scene in this film (I think when Chris meets Nola in the bar after her audition) where Scarlett is just constantly clearing her throat. It's extremely distracting and adds absolutely nothing to the scene. Seems like a very odd choice for Scarlett to do this, unless she had a cold while filming or something?

Has anyone heard anything about this very bizarre and brief character trait?

"This is dead air, Barry....dead air."

She had something stuck in her throat.

I noticed that too btw, and it is distracting and pointless.

Part of a naturalistic acting style. In real life people clear their throats. Did her character smoke? I don't remember... If you found it annoying, fair play to you; but it's just part of the style. It happens a lot in Woody Allen films - characters stammer, stutter, mumble, clear their throats and so on. Sometimes this style annoys me, but I never find it too affected in Allen's films, it just seems like the actors feel comfortable enough to talk in non-theatrical speech rhythms and to allow their quirks and idiosyncrasies through.

She was drinking a lot and intoxicated. She also had odd facial expressions and speech consistent with intoxication. It wasn't Johansson. It was her character. It's called acting.

Yup. Agreed. All part of naturalism and acting, yes.
