I have a better idea, why don't we not limit the subject of any filmmaker, and only demand the film is excellent?
The reason why WWII movies involving Nazis and the U.S. needs to be told, is because some people in the world has become smug and arrogant and forgotten the great sacrifice and contribution the U.S. made to literally save the world. Surely they didn't do this alone, which is why other countries should tell the stories of their contribution, but don't expect U.S. filmmakers to tell their stories.
The reason why "We Shall Overcome" movies need to be made, is because it has only been until recently that such movies could be made without the associated anger and necessity for them to be "message" movies. Now, the story can be told simply for the beauty of the telling.
The reason why the comic book hero gene needs to be told, is because it is always going to be fun and exciting to see someone do something that isn't possible in this (sometimes) boring life.
The reason why movies need to be made about things that were on TV first, is because some of us enjoy reliving the goofiness, if it is done well.
The reason why romantic comedies need to be told from the female perspective, is because when it's told from the male perspective, it's called "porn".
The reason why movies need to be made that are from Judd Apatow, is because many people like that, including me.
The reason why some sequels need to be made, is because some sequels are good... Godfather II anyone? Empire Strikes Back?
That's what I think.
