The name 'Owens'

Does anyone know if the Owens family name was something different in the original book or screenplay? Queen Latifah's real name is Dana Elaine Owens, and I was wondering if that name was used as a tip of the hat to her. If not, that's one heck of a coincidence.

You can easily read any description of the book to see that it was nothing more than a coincidence.
