Her performance was alright and everything but my problem with her is that she took care of Dakota's character's mother when she was a child which would make her old enough to be Dakota's grandmother: the problem is she looks old enough to be Dakota's mother not grandmother. Couldn't they have found an older woman for the role?

Oh, I suppose that makes sense, but I was thinking August, being the oldest, had to help her parents support her family and had to start out young. Not to mention, there are not a lot of high profile or high profile jobs for young black girls in the rural South. So the fact that the young white couple (Lily's grandparents) could afford to pay a young girl to "raise" her daughter.
shareSure they could have cast someone else, but I think Queen Latifah gave an excellent preformance in this film. I understand the sisters were supposed to be in their sixties, but that would involve casting unknowns. How many black actresses in their sixties can you name?
Being inconsistent is better than being consistently bad.
Just because August was suppose to be in her sixes doesn't mean the actress had to be.

shareDoes the book say that she was in her 60s? Because I think it's entirely reasonable that she was a nanny to young Dakata, and she was probably a young teenager herself. Example: Dakota's mother is 7 years old, a 15 or 16 year old Queen Latifah is hired by the family to take care of the child. Child grows up and has her own daughter at age 18, Queen Latifah is now 26 years old. Then, Dakota grows to age 14, Queen is now 40 years old. This seemed normal to me, not unusual. But I wonder what the book said about her age.
shareI know it's personal taste and all, but I've never like seeing her in movies. I ALWAYS think: Oh ... there's Queen Latifah. I never buy any of her characters, and she's a distraction from the film. For me ... I know others will feel differently.
