Lily's father made her do it for a whole hour after catching her rebuttoning her blouse in the peach grove and talking about her getting pregnant.

In the book, it was just his way of punishing her for misbehaving- noting to do with contraceptives.

From Rosaleen asking Lily how long he made her kneel this time, it was obvious that this was a consistent form of punishment.

Uncooked rice is what was used here in the North. If there was talking or goofing around in church, we got 45 minutes (the length of time our services were). Only happened once to me and that was because I accidentally dropped the money dish when it was being passed. I think I was about 6 or 7 at the time; I'll never forget watching the kitchen wall clock the whole time (I was supposed to be praying, but of course, ....).
