What really bothered me about this movie

I agree that the rape scene was not really necessary even though it didn't show anything and had it had anything to do with the plot, I could have tolerated it more. I understand that the rape is representative of something that really happens. It doesn't surprise me that the rape happened because it seemed like the director kept trying to portray Fanning as a sex object. With all the close-ups of Dakota impersonating Elvis showing her legs and figure as she was dancing I couldn't help but think of how sick that was. Not to mention the scenes with her in her underwear. All-together it seemed the director was trying to portray her like a director would portray Angelina Jolie or Charlize Theron and thats just inappropriate.

I agree with you. But it kinda shocked me that a child could so easily be portrayed that way. It made me kinda scared for little girls.

no one would even think about stuff like that if our culture wasn't so hypersexualized. and people making a big deal out if this is just bringing attention to that. once you read all this complaining and weirdoness you can't help but pay attention to any little thing that poor kid does.

actualy the rape scene is rather vital to the plot. she lost her trust in her best friend because of it, she lost her self confedance because of it and she lost her desire to sing because of it. its because of that scene that the rest of the movie really takes place.

showing her as a sex object? good lord, grow up a little. only the people who are hardcore bible thumpers or people who are themselves a little more than interested in little girls would even think of that.

i wonder which one you are

I think the sexualization of Dakota is important and not at all uncommon. When I was 10/11/12 I was starting to like boys and developing and it definitely wasn't only boys my age that were noticing. It was older boys and men. It's sad and might be disturbing to watch onscreen because if you aren't female you probably haven't been through it. I found it truthful.

Excellent point mesmerize4eva. I recall those experiences very vividly as a pre-teen girl and it both disgusted and confused me. Sad, but accurate!

I can't understand why everyone is making such a big item about Fanny being in her underwear so much. For one thing, it was during the summer, and they had no air conditioning. It was VERY hot!! The director was only depicting how it probabbly was back then. They were more than likely just trying to adapt to the climate.

I live in a glass house, ergo, I throw no stones.

Lets not forget the part when she dressed in that ballet outfit that was too little for her. And the camera conveniently behind her getting a clear shot of her ass in the panties. I agree, I couldn't help but feel Dakotas was being portrayed as a 10 year old sex symbol. And i've learned that people on this message board are ignorant, so they will not understand what we are trying to say lol.

No doubt, the Dakota panty shots are aplenty in this film. Every 10 or 15 fifteen minutes we get another shot of Dakota in her panties. But I suppose the reason for this is she's a "poor white girl" that can't afford decent clothes.

And yeah, the ballerina outfit was atleast 3 sizes too small. Dakota looked really cute in it though. LOL! The whole thing kind of reminded me of those japanese anime characters that have their hair made up but are wearing clothes that are way too small. Ohh well... I don't think Lewellen/Dakota was necessarily portrayed as a sex object, it is just a role in a movie but all the panty shots were a bit odd.

But whatever, the film itself is just not that good, which makes all the extra attention it received kind of funny.I mean, all that attention for a crap film like this when the good films don't recieve hardly any attention.
