Her dad *possible spoilers*

Did anyone else think he would have tried something if she had sat in his lap as he requested? Or no?

reply

When he asked her to sit in his lap, I thought to myself, "Uh-oh here it comes." But she didn't sit in his lap, and nothing happened. Looking back at the scene, I really don't think he had any intentions of raping her. It's his own daughter (I know it doesn't stop some guys) and we don't see any evidence at all that he has a sexual interest in her.

Yea I watched it again and I agree. Ha I guess it's just because the movie had so many sexual undertones in it I got paranoied :)

My girlfriend also "Uh-oh'd" at that part. That's one of the problems that a bunch of buzz surrounding a controversial scene in your movie causes... your audience is anticipating that much talked about sequence, and is super sensitive to every little moment that could potentially lead to it.

His injury made him really simple and loving so I don't think so, but she gave him that pill and he like, ate her hand I wondered if he was gonna attack her at some point.

After the accident, her father was a half-wit and basically a child. He did say/do some *strange* things (licked her fingers, kept talking about how pretty her hair/dress was, asking her to sit on his lap), but imho, I don't think he'd hurt her.

Orderly- "5 hours."
Nina- "Question him."

When Lewellen asks her dad why he wanted her to sit in his lap, he responds by saying because it feels so good. It is therefore implied she has sat in his lap before and he gained some pleasure from the occurrence beyond a father cuddling with his daughter.

reply

Why does it imply that "he gained some pleasure from the occurrence beyond a father cuddling with his daughter?" There is nothing in what was said there that really indicates he abused her.

I think you maybe right that that's what the filmmaker was going after, but she totally fails to make the case for that based on the exchange.

reply

I got that too from the way he said "feels so good" or something - definitely indicated some other type of pleasure more than just normal cuddling your child.

I haven't read the script but parts were posted here before and there were scenes cut which more strongly implied abuse. I think he masturbated in front of her? And there was something else. I think some type of abuse was implied but I really can't remember.

I also thought "uh oh" when he asked her to sit in his lap. I was so relieved when nothing happened. Later, it became obvious that he didn't mean anything sexual by it.

reply

Yes. Though since nothing happened, I wish they really would've edited that scene out. That "cause it feels so good" comment just pushed me over the edge of confusion. Did he mean it in a loving, fatherly way, or a sexual one? If there wasn't anything sexual about it, they could've very well rephrased it.

I wish I hadn't known a rape scene was even in this movie because I spent the entire time preoccupied with who was going to do it that every time any little thing happened, I was like "Oh god, here it comes." Which really took something away from the movie for me.

I know this is an old post but I just saw this movie yesterday. Every time she was alone with her father I thought he was going to abuse her but so glad HE didn't.
