1. Children smoking cigarettes 2. Children drinking beers 3. Children stipping naked 4. Children looking at another's penis for a kiss 5. Children running around in underwear in the rain 6. Children being raped
Really, what was the director's purpose of this film. These FACTS are throughout the movie and it seems she had another agenda. Too bad it failed and rightfully so. Sick movie indeed.
"exploitation:use or utilization, esp. for profit"
That's the definition of exploitation. There is no definition for child exploitation. So yes, this movie was made for profite and does exploit ALL of its actors. That's the only way this movie is exploitation.
To name a couple: Pretty Baby (Brooke Shields was 12 and was 14 when she did Blue Lagoon), Taxi Driver, (Jodie Foster was 12) Eye for an Eye, (Character was 17) most recently The Last House on the Left (character was 17)
Underage drinking and smoking is NOT new to the movie scene.
But it's not illegal to portray those things in a movie. If she were really smoking and drinking at 12, then yeah, that would be wrong. But you can't compare it being illegal in real life to something in a movie. Otherwise you would have to include every other movie that portrayed underage drinking and smoking.
Venom, I'd like you to know first off that I joined for the sole purpose of telling you how completely and utterly stupid you are. You have to remember the time period this movie is filmed (1950s). Also pay attention to the story line, everything that happens in this film follows the logic of the story. Don't ever post again unless you know what the hell you are talking about.
first off its based in basicly the middle of nowhere back in the late mid-late 50's.
as for your little list, well let me talk about those in order
1: im pretty sure kids have been smoking cigarettes for as long as they've been around. so whats your point?
2: kids have been drinkin beers forever as well. again, whats your point?
3: are you saying that you dont think kids should ever be naked?
4: oh please, theres nothing wrong with that. its how people learn sometimes, its not like either kids in that situation was forced to do their part.
5: they lived in a very poor town, its quite common to just wear your undies if your going swimming.
6: unforutnatly thats not exactly a new idea as well. people rape people all too often.
seriously.. what is the point of your topic? its like watching a football movie and saying "FACTS: football players wear uniforms" you didnt provide anything of any use whatsoever ------ Just because your there, doesnt mean i have to listen to you
Children smoke cigarettes all the time. They drink beer all the time also. I'm pretty sure every child has been naked at least once in their lives. Again, this happens also. Never go to the beach or to a swimming pool. You'll see children in less clothes than underwear and a top. Sadly, this happens every single day.
Jesus you people are idiots. Were you not ever kids? Kids experement, kids drink, kids see each other naked (hell, kids even masturbate, it's called normal behavior). Kids smoke. Step out of your trite little vacuums once and a while; this ain't Disney: it's the real world.
I'm not saying everything is right, but here goes with my opinion: Everyone I meet from the 50s, my parents included, smoked since they were 8 or around that age. Is it right? No, but at the time, they didn't know cigarettes were harmful to one's health. As for drinking beers, again in the 50s almost everyone drank alcohol.
Now, I'm sure people will jump down my throat here and pretend what I say isn't true, but you're lying to yourselves. Humans are fairly sexual creatures, whether we attempt to suppress this issue or not. I don't think I've ever met anyone in my neighborhood growing up who didn't look through dirty magazines to see what a penis looked like, or play Truth Or Dare with their friends to get each other to do stupid, sexually-oriented things.
Children DO run around in their underwear until they are taught not to, and since she didn't particularly have any parental guidance, what do you expect? As for being raped, this unfortunately happens in real life. Again, it sucks and it isn't right that it happens, but when it does and the person lives through it, it changes his or her life.
Why are we so afraid to face anything real? If people see the movie as "sick," it's because they are scared of any dangers in life and can't deal with it right in their face, even if it's pretend.
By the way, a lot of people on here have absolutely no idea how movies are made.
When I said sick I meant it's not for the weak at heart. Most people will view this film as that. Of course there are other factors like filmmaking, storytelling, and a dose of realism. That make a film like this more than one-dimensional.
The purpose of my post was to get honest opinions. And you made a great one. With good reason, such a life of those things isn't bad or wrong for (some/most) children. But in fact a way of life.
I stand corrected. I misunderstood your context of the word "sick." You have to admit, people seem to really think that when the movie was made, Fanning was lying there naked with some boy on top of her, or that she really ran around in her underwear. They also seem to think that she had to act like she was being raped, when in fact, in many movies, the actor sits on a stool, makes faces into a camera, as directed by the... what's it called again? director!
Fanning admitted herself that she was told to look right, look left, gasp, etc. Yes it does take a talented actress to perform those expressions exactly the way the director requested, but it isn't at all traumatizing to the actress.
BTW I like that you're looking for honest opinions, not just seeking agreement.
