Was Lewellen pregnant?
Did she get pregnant from the rape? The film seemed to imply that, but I wasn't sure. I wanted to see what other people thought.

shareI don't see how she could be. While Dakota was 12 years old during filming, the character was supposed to be 9. The vast majority of girls are still prepubescent at that age, and are not capable of getting pregnant.
sharethey can give birth at young age like that, the problem is they likely have to do c-section. as you said there body are not mature enough yet
shareLewellen did not get pregnant from the rape. She was sick from the infection she acquired when her hand was poked by the rusty nail in the shed. It is however a good allusion to her experience.
And for the record, Lewellen was not nine. She was ten at least, but more likely eleven. As far as my experience with children goes, there is a huge difference between 9 and 10 or 9 and 11. Fanning herself may have been 12, I don't know.
On that note, it is very possible for an eleven, ten, or even nine year old girl to get pregnant. Contrary to popular opinion, a girl of nine years old is perfectly capable of conceiving a child. However at her young age it is unlikely the child will come to term. If the child is born, it is not likely to be healthy. Even if it is healthy, the young mother is probably both physically and emotionally ill equipped to tend to the baby's needs.
Or, in other words: Conceive? Possible. Give birth? Not likely, but not impossible.
In fact, a female is capable of conceiving just 28 days before her first period. Although this in no terms means she is "of child bearing age", it is not impossible. Try doing a Google search on the youngest mother known to record. I believe she was only five years old when her pregnancy was confirmed.

Unfortunately, 12 is NOT too young to get pregnant. Further, 12 is not prepubescent.
However, Lewellen was not pregnant.
I agree the scene was ugly.

When someone says "you're wrong" one is apt to reply hotly, boasting accreditation. I'm going to curb my desire to do that though and instead just recommend that you do a little research. Making statements like that can be misconstrued as being offensive.
Here is an excerpt from kidshealth.org. Use the power of Google and you'll find some other links too. Or just get a book on puberty from the library.
"Usually, puberty starts between ages 8 and 13 in girls and ages 10 and 15 in boys. This wide range in ages may help explain why some of your friends still look like young kids whereas others look more like adults."

My wife, for example had her first period at 10 and started growing breasts at 8. We were childhood sweethearts, so I know she isn't lying. lol.
And if your curiosity is really piqued, try doing some research on the youngest recorded, confirmed pregnancy in history. She was five. I kid you not. Further I'd like to stress that if a girl has reached a stage of puberty in which she could get pregnant, that does not mean that she has all of the characteristics of a woman. Puberty happens in stages, and they may not all occur at the same time or at the same rate.
There are a few other posts I have made on this board with more information and also under another board for a movie called Turtles Can Fly. Feel free to look at those postings too for more information.
Anyway, I am quite certain that Lewellen was NOT pregnant. The argument here is that she *could* have gotten pregnant.

If a girl has started her cycle (or ovulate for the first time) it is possible for her to get pregnant. I read a story recently of a 9 year old who was raped , got pregnant and gave birth at 10, probably had a c-section Here is the article http://www.wpbf.com/news/27306984/detail.html
I don’t think Lewellen was pregnant just sick. Sick about what happened to her and even sick because of her hand a little too.

I did read somewhere on here that was implied in the original script with a line that was taken out, which in combination with the throwing up etc made quite a heavy implication. She did seem prepubescent though (for those going to start a fight about it, even though puberty can start young her character didn't seem to really be in puberty based on her physical appearance, etc. also the youngest ever mother at 5 was suffering from an unusual condition called precocious puberty). The throwing up could easily be a reaction to the trauma though. I don't think the film strongly implied it.
shareCan you remember what that line said?
